Hi guys, a few days ago I bought a refurbished Dell Latitude D600 laptop which was advertised as having 512MB Ram. I recieved the laptop to find that there were 2 x 256MB Ram cards inserted (equalling out to the advertised 512MB) however one of the slots where the RAM goes in appears to be faulty because at the moment my laptop is only running off 256MB Ram. So as I only have one ram slot working with not alot of RAM, so I have decided to invest in a RAM upgrade. i had a look on ebay and found that I can (apparantly - according to the laptop compatability in the listing) replace my current 266mhz PC2100 ram card(s) for a PC2700 DDR333 1GB Ram card. All I would like to know is, will this work with my laptop?? And if I run my laptop with JUST the 1 x 1GB Ram card ON ITS OWN, will it run at PC2700 speed, and will i notice a great increase in speed and performance??? Thanks alot guys

You know, if that seller offered any sort of warranty or guarantee on that machine, you should really complain or file a claim.

That being said, you can use a single 1GB memory stick on the D600. It may be picky about brand and latencies, but I had a D600 running a single 1GB Kingston PC2700 SODIMM for a while without much problem. You will definitely see some sort of performance boost over your current 256MB, but it'll be more or less pronounced depending on what you're doing.

If you do it right, it'll be plug and play.

Pretty much. You should not need to do anything other than insert a new stick in.

You really should file a claim against the seller though, it is damaged goods.

Just don't do it wrong? I don't know, some people just seem to be super technically unlucky. I mean as long as you don't break anything, it'll be fine.

It's ok I know what im doing ram wise, because for the past couple of days ive been switching ram cards around inside the laptop to see what works and what doesn't. And I have contacted the seller and he has offered to re-imburseme me for money I paid for the new ram card so i'll have an upgrade which I haven't had to pay for.

Eek...it is still damaged hardware though, so I am not sure how I feel about the seller's offer. If there was an advertised warranty on it, and confirm the warranty details with Dell, you might be able to get them to fix it.

I don't know. If one thing is broken, I usually feel suspicious that something else is probably wrong...or will go wrong soon.
