I am attempting to fix a laptop for a friend which has a short on the motherboard
(tag = DS/N CN-04518-48155-246-5958) where the power brick is
loaded down when it is plugged into the laptop.

I removed the motherboard and un-soldered the power connector and measured
the resistance between the +20v power pin and ground and it
    reads ~ 2 ohms.
Not having a schematic for this circuit, I am not sure how this connected and
found it difficult to follow the artwork traces on t he board due to the solder mask.

I did notice that the board appears to be cracked as it flexes when a little bit
of pressure is placed under the board where the power connector is located.

I am not sure if there are any internal artwork layers containing power in that
    section of the board.
I would like to fix this if possible if anyone has a schematic or
    artwork info for this board
or any other typical areas that fail on this board that cause this symptom.

Otherwise, I may just need to replace the motherboard. I see a couple of these on
    e-bay for a reasonable
amount but the codes on the tag don't totally match up. Is part of the
number on the tag, a unique number
like serial number or lot code info?

One fellow has a mother board with the following number on the tag:
    DS/N CN - 04P518-48155-23M-0163
    and mine is:
    DS/N CN-04518-48155-246-5958

Are these both drop in replacements?

Any other useful information about swapping the motherboard in this unit
    is also appreciated.

    thanks

As long as it is the same part number. The S/N you posted is Dell's PPID, aka the serialized part.

    Thanks

So can I tell if the mother board that I want to buy is the correct one based off of that information in Dell's PPID? If so, which digits need to match up for it to be a drop in replacement?

    thanks again

No PPID is a way of tracking the serial number of the motherboard. It's just a 20-23 digit number. All you need is the correct DP/N

    Thanks-

Where is the DP/N number located?

Isn't the Dell part number of this item: 04518-48155 if the tag number is: DS/N CN-04518-48155-246-5958

    ???

Please advise- I would like to get this part on order if it is the correct one.

    thank you
