    Hello guys,

I'm interested in upgrading M4800's CPU to i7-4940MX extreme.
    Is this possible?
i7-4940MX CPU now sells for under $300 on Ebay.
Can I simply open up M4800 and swap my i7-4800MQ CPU into 4940MX?
I wonder if it will cause any error....
I would like to get this 4.0Ghz extreme CPU on my M4800.

    Thanks in advance.

Also, I would like to know if it's possible to put this 4940mx extreme CPU on i5 dual core version M4800.
can its motherboard use i7 extreme?

What are your workflows/workloads that would benefit from taking down a working system and gaining at the most less ~17% (multithreaded) and less than ~14% raw performance gains? And at a $300 hit...

That is of course assuming that the cooling design on your M4800 is able to take the additional heat put out by the extreme chip too (10W higher, nominal).

But when you overclock 4940MX, you can get a ton of power.. I imagine it can get 4.5GHz speed.

Is there anyone who tried to replace i7 quad core CPU on M4800?

I learned CPU on M4800 series is not soldered. You can take its CPU out without much hassles...but I'm not sure if its motherboard is compatible with newer CPU.

Can't believe no one has answered you since my last reply? (I've been off the grid for a few weeks...).

That 10W higher nominal TDP is not to be taken lightly. Especially when you want to overclock it.

The motherboard (logic) shouldn't have an issue with the CPU you're so keen on. Whether or not the rest of the design is up to providing the power and the cooling requirements for the processor is what I would be concerned with (short term and long term).

    Good luck.

A few M4800 shipped with 4940MX from Dell.
M4800 is supposed to be able to handle 4940MX.
There's one model left on ebay with 4940mx but its price tag is ridiculous.

Dell Alienware with 4940MX shipped overcloked (4.4GHz speed)
    https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/arti...-laptop-chip-clock-speed-4-4ghz-alienware-18/

So I guess it's possible to get 4.4GHz CPU speed on M4800.. that's going to be super powerful.
Maybe I might need to carry around this USB powered laptop fan to reduce heat?

Anyways, if you guys tried i7-4940MX upgrade on M4800, please let me know.
I've seen i7-4940MX selling for $200 or less on ebay... 4940MX was the fastest CPU in 2014 but it still makes sense now... especially if you overclock it, it's faster than newer i7 CPUs.

A little late, but here's my experience. I have 2 M4800s, one came with a i7-4800mq and one with the i7-4810mq. The 4940MX did not work with the M4800 with the older i7-4800mq, but it does work with the one that came with the i7-4810mq. My older m4800 (w/i7-4800mq) does work with the 4930mx. I was up to date on the BIOS also.

If your original has the i7-4x00, or any of that line, I'd go with the 4930mx. If your original CPU is the i7-4x10, then you should be ok with the 4940mx. There is almost a year difference between the release dates of the 4x00 and 4x10 lines.
