I have a Studio 1558 and was thinking of getting the
Intel 320 Series SSDSA2CW120G310 2.5" 120GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - OEM but according to Dell, it won't work? I thought a 2.5" form factor was all I needed to know. Now I'm confused. Interesting that a much more expensive Samsung 128GB is compatible.

EDIT: Just spoke to another Dell rep and it is compatible. Got it for $35 off plus free next day delivery from Dell. Should have it Tuesday. Any tips would be much appreciated. I had an SSD fail on my Dell Mini 9 and replacing it was a breeze. Laptop only supports SATA-2, so went for reliability and frequent updates from Intel.

Last EDIT: Price was $10 less than it was 3 hours ago. Called back to cancel order & get same deal on the same one listed now for $10 less. Was listed at $222 earlier. Now at $210.99. Less $35 discount it's $177. Eight dollars more than New Egg, but I will have it Tuesday, so it's worth the eight bucks.

Since it was already in production I had to cancel my last order and got an additional $15 off for final before tax total of $162. Now it's less than New Egg's price. :)

Dell doesn't know what they're talking about. Unless they've started whitelisting SSDs in their BIOS (they haven't), anything will work as long a it's 2.5" SATA.

Exactly. What a bunch of nonsense. I think the sales rep was not being truthful and was trying to "up sell" me a much more expensive Samsung and offered $50 off. I didn't bite. They must have sales quotas and or commissions. I think they think they can pull that crap on unaware customers. I have sent an email asking for his manager's email address. I hate being purposely being misled and my time wasted. Conversely, I went to my local Micro Center last week to pick up 8GB of RAM that was on sale and wasn't treated like an idiot. I'm an ex old school overclocker and have been building my desktops for many years. Just haven't kept up with current SSDs for my laptop.

The end result is I got a great deal on the drive ($162 before tax and free next business day delivery). It will be here Tuesday. But typical Dell, the whole process of cancelling one order to get the better deal is a PITA and I will have to check on Tuesday to see if they got it all sorted out correctly.
