So I have the Vostro 1400 with the T7250 Processor (2.0 GHz, 800 MHz FSB 65nm)

Can I upgrade my laptop to an intel X7800 X7900 or X9000?

I have the Crestline PM965 Chipset (northbridge).

    Is it doable?

Also, I have the 8400M GS GPU on board. Is this replaceable as well?

    Thanks a lot.

I think the latest I would recommend would be the T6670. Pretty much if your computer wasn't built with the extreme series then the notebook cooling system won't be able to handle it (properly anyways), plus the t6670 is 45nm vs 65nm so it'll run cooler. But the 8400m GS that's in that notebook is integrated onto the MoBo I think, not MXM, so it wouldn't be user replacable.

best cpu for you would be T9500.

Ok, so I get that the T9500 (Duo 2.5 GHz, right) is the best stock, but heat aside, could my machine physically run a x7800? I can mod my laptop (so its not much of a laptop anymore) and cool it. I just want to know if it will run... (I'm trying to play GTA IV...)

Sorry to sound like a noob. I do put together desktops and I do tech support in my free time. Im just not that familiar with laptop hardware. Thanks again.

The only dell laptop I've ever upgraded was an E6400 Business Latitude, and it was picky, but other than that I've not touched many dells. I'm leaving this one to someone who can get you a better answer.

It will run the X7900. but as said, you would probably need to do a copper mod or modify the cooling system in some way to make it more efficient.

The 8400M GS is only replaceable if it uses the MXM connector. You may need to take the laptop apart to verify this, unless you can find solid evidence that it uses the MXM format. I think the 8400M GS uses MXM I, so you are fairly limited in that respect. Unless I am wrong, and it is MXM II. If it is MXM II, then you can pick up a 9600M GT off Ebay for about $120. Beware though, it is a process that will require a lot of experience, as you may need to modify the heatsink or even make your own, to give room for larger capacitors, etc.

I don't think heat will be the main problem, it will be 45W specification..
The chances are it will not boot up in Vostro 1400.

But if you don't mind to try, then try it up and please do inform us whether you succeed or not :)

i would guess you have no chance, inspiron 1420 (identical to vostro 1400) got bios A10 update(Fixes/Enhancements:1. Added support for Intel new processor. ) with new cpus but no A10 bios for 1400.

Exactly. If they are identical, then why can't they use the same BIOS?

Incidentally, I would pick the T9300 over the T9500. The extra 0.1 Ghz will hardly show up for most users, and the T9300 is usually considerably cheaper.

I even didn't know they had A10 bios until you posted LOL..
but I think the support is for T6xxx not X series right? bcause 45W specification is more like hardware specification? cmiiw

for garunteed satisfaction and no problems... T9300 would be ur best bet... X7900 could work but last time someone tried using it with a Studio XPS M1530... the whole laptop got screwed up due to overheating... just forget it... anyways 0.2 GHz more than T9500... so if u really want the extra 0.3GHz over T9300 , get T9500...but IMO not worth it... T9300 would be my final choice...
