I assume your Vostro doesn't have dedicated graphics, if so the best you can go are i5-560M, i5-580M, i7-620M and i7-640M. The performance difference between them is very small so you may as well get the cheapest one.

inb4 someone says not worth it

    does it matter?
what about bios support of i5-560M, i5-580M, i7-620M and i7-640M?
and what about i7-720qm CPU? is it compatible? just only 25$

Yep it does matter, with dedicated graphics you can consider quad core i7, such as i7-720QM as you've mentioned.

But before buying one, make sure your Vostro doesn't have switchable graphics capability as all Nehalem quad core i7 don't have integrated graphics chip on the CPU. This can be confirmed in Device Manager in Windows: If you only see AMD Radeon HD 6450M in "Display adapters" section, it means the laptop only uses the dedicated graphics. If so then you should be good to go.

And when you upgrade your CPU, update the BIOS (if available) before doing so. This is especially true in first-gen Core i3/i5/i7 laptops like this as this gen spans two nodes (45nm and 32nm) and three steppings (B1, C2, K0).

aha... yes, switchable graphics capability is present.... as i understand, Intel HD will not work, because Nehalem CPUs haven't integrated graphics chip. Will my Radeon 6450m graphics work if i install 720QM CPU without Intel HD?

Well unless you can force the laptop to only use dedecated graphics I don't think a quad will work. With switchable graphics the laptop needs both the integrated and dedicated graphics to even POST, and that's before thinking about Windows.

FYI someone has tried doing similar thing and failed, which I suspect is due to switchable graphics: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-i5-2540m-both-rpga988b.790773/#post-10246232
