I have a Dell X300 with 640mb DDR PC2100 ram (128mb MB intergrated & 1 x 512mb sodimm, and I want to upgrade the ram to the max supported 1152mb by replacing the 512mb sodimm with a 1gb one.

My question is relates to compatibility with ram speed and the ability of the X300 to underclock a faster sodimm.

A 1gb PC2100 sodimm will cost about AUD$150, where as a PC2700 or PC3200 sodimm can be had for about AUD$70.

Has anyone had experience with a Dell X300 (or Inspirion 300m) memory upgade? Specifically using PC2700 or PC3200 sodimm's?

    Any info is appreciated

In theory, you should be able to use any speed of DDR memory. PC2700 and PC3200 should work, but they will run at PC2100 speeds. Dells during and before this era have been reported to be picky with memory, though, so there is an element of chance here. Buy a stick of memory you can return and try it out :)

if you are in the united states, try zipzoomfly or newegg for better prices. Last I heard a 1Gb ddr sodimm was around $40

All memory is supposed to comply with JEDEC standards, meaning it should be able to downclock to lower frequencies, in order for a wide range of compatibility.

This should work without any problem in your system:

This is a good PC2100 card:

I have 2 Corsair VS1GSDS400 cards in my Dell inspiron 8500. They clock down from PC3200 speeds to PC2100 speeds. It has been stable for more than 3 years like that.

You are safe buying either PC2100 or PC2700 for your system

You can definitely use faster RAM. I have three of the X300 ultraportables lined up to post on ebay, and I got DDR333 1gb sticks of RAM on ebay for about...$30-35 US and they work great. They will clock to the speed of the RAM soldered on the mainboard. I also ran Vista on these laptops and it worked just fine (no Aero effects of course with the i855 chipset and graphics).
