i have an xps m1330 with 3 years next day warranty/insurance.

if i was to buy a 9 cell battery, 200gb 7200rpm hd, 4gb ram and switch the necessary components would this void the warranty? Can I check the terms somewhere?

    cheers.

If you buy the battery from DeLL will likely be covered under your warranty. The upgrades you mention will not void your warranty. The parts other than maybe the battery will not be covered but will not void.

As stated... only upgrades which involve taking the kaptop apart (i.e. a motherboard replacement) void your warranty.
You can upgrade anything which just involves removing the small covers on the bottom of the laptop (RAM/HDD), or replacing the battery, without worrying ;)

If you buy an aftermarket non-Dell battery, and the laptop dies, Dell will probably void the warranty for using a non-OEM power source.

Mitch which is why you would have it serviced with the OEM batt in and no mention of non OEM batt. ;)

Well, according to that logic if you buy non-Dell RAM or a non-Dell HDD and either component fails, then Dell would probably void the warranty as well.

    Here is the Limited Warranty:
    http://www.dell.com/warranty

    And I quote:
I would go for the upgrades though. I have an HP dv9000, and when I got it I was trying to run vista with 1 GB of RAM. I upgraded mine to 2GB with aftermarket RAM.

In the worse case scenario if an aftermarket stick of RAM or HDD were to cause the Dell to fail - Just keep the original HDD and RAM, throw it back in and send it back to Dell.

Don't read too much into that guys. I mean it is really a no brainer. Anyone care to tell the likely hood of RAM and HDD doing anything more than just failing? And if they did it clearly would not be proper to try and get warranty service in that circumstance.

But back to first point, is it even theoretically possible for HDD and RAM to cause damage? And yea I know a screwdriver could but I mean RAM and HDD that once functioned?

Well, the other thing is that if it did fail (regardless if it was the RAM or HDD), you would loose the RAM and HDD in an RMA.

The HDD or RAM would have to be damaged to cause damage. And even then, all you're gonna get are the errors at POST.

That is my thinking and just wanted to clarify. If it won't cause damage don't worry about the warranty in that regard. I could speak much more about warranties as they relate to cars and in fact it is critical that the added component is the cause. I don't care much what DeLL says there are rules on these issues. DeLL can not just void warranty. Neither can any other company because they want. In this regard it seems to me DeLL is actually very fair. This whole will they void my warranty, well it gets misguided and misunderstood very fast. With out starting a major fight. You can change your CPU and unless the CPU causes the problem you are covered. Sadly this does have a lot common sense behind it. People talk of stickers? Well I have only seen on HDD (don't open it up) opening your case? Well you need to clean dust they cannot restrict that, it lacks common sense. Sorry I was bored and warranty stuff? Well they can say what they want but there are laws that cover at least here in the US. ;) :)
