    Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum, and i consider myself somewhat noob when it comes to computers. I was just wondering if i could pull the blu ray drive out of my xps l502x and sell it to my friend who has the exact same computer. Just wondering if it is a plug and play ordeal or is it more than that?

Hot swap is changing a component when the computer is running.

You should turn the laptops off, then pull the drive out an install it in the other one.

sorry i didn't mean i would do it while running. well i received the other 502x in today and swapped my bluray drive from my l502x for the other computers dvd drive. The dvd drive is working great on my computer but i cannot get blu ray discs to play on the other laptop. windows recognizes the drive and installed the drivers. It also recognizes the blu ray disc in the drive and i can access all of the files on the disc. just cannot get it to play with power dvd, windows media player, or media player classic. Any ideas?

    You need the Blu-ray software.

If you have SATA operation in AHCI, you don't need to reboot to hot swap, that's the whole point of AHCI.

And yes you will need to purchase Blu-ray software to be able to watch it. Most laptops give you a disc for trial software. It's about 60-100 dollars.

You can rip BDs to MKV files that will play on most media players. ;)

If you own the BD you can make a backup of it using DVDfab, then use VLC(a media player)to play it. VLC will play raw BD files using the 'open folder' option.

@AHCI it works 90% of the time... I know when I take the DVD drive out of my m860tu I need to reboot in order for it to recognize....

Maybe your BIOS is flaky with AHCI, my E6410 would randomly BSOD on RAID or AHCI.
