I'm going to be starting uni soon, and may feel like watching some Blu-Rays on an evening in my dorm. It seems the cheapest option would be to grab a desktop internal Blu-Ray drive such as this, and connect over USB using this. I don't need portability when watching a movie, this seems like something I can just hook up when required.

    Will this actually work?

Is there enough bandwidth over USB2.0 for that to work? I'd look into that, because there's a very real possibility there isn't. On top of that, you need to make sure HDCP won't bork you in the bum.

I believe you need to use firewire or eSATA for bluray due to high bandwidth throughput

Surely USB's 480mbit is overkill? Plus you can buy USB-based external Blu-Ray drives, they're just more expensive.

I expect you're going to need external power because USB power may not be enough to power a bluray drive.

Its gonna use up 2 USB ports to power that thing.

Firewire might be a better option

I'll power it using the power brick for the caddy - it's only for use in my dorm. I'll look into Firewire as an option though, I've never really used Firewire.
