Meant Mobo in the title. So I was dismantling my PC to move it across the Atlantic when I accidentally put the CPU cover underneath the metal latch on the MoBo instead of on-top. I was trying to keep the connectors safe and ended up maybe doing the opposite. There's a line where it looks like a few pins are missing now and one is bent down below.

See links below for potential damage (can't embed for some reason):

Shall I even risk attaching my i5-4690k to this or just buy a new one? If so, any suggestions on the cheapest MoBo that will work with that and my 980?

That socket is broken. The bent pins can be fixed, but if pins are missing that's not an easy repair. You can look for basically any Z97 mobo and it'll be fine (H97 will work but then you can't overclock that i5).

Thanks - assumed that was the case. I'll try and fix it but I have a feeling there's a few gone. Guessing every single one needs to line up right?

And to top it off I lost my new Microsoft surface pen last night... There's another 35gbp in expense. Not a good week in electronics for me.

Yikes. At least the rest of your rig is fine. I'd recommend a mobo for you but I mostly know the good deals in the U.S. market. Anything Z97 with decent reviews should be fine.

I had similiar problem like yours but I managed to use a small flat head screw driver and was able to move the contact pads back into place and keep the system working. This happened because I was changing my cpu cooler from iNtel standard to a Cooler Master 212. I got everything back to normal and working again. But next time I will watch it. Pins can be bent back with a mechanical .05 pencil but if broken not much you can do but buy another replacement board.
