My notebook's hard drive recently crashed on me and won't even allow a reformat. Everytime I try to it hangs up, except when I do a quick reformat. When the quick format finishes and allows me to install XP Pro on my notebook it cycles through but then gives an error stating it can't find the System32/setup file/folder. So I am assuming now my Hard Drive is corrupted. So my main question is....
What is ATA-6 and IDE Ultra ATA100 and how do I know which mine is that I need to replace. This is just based off of what I found on Newegg.com. I know for sure it's not Serial-ATA150.

Talk about Deja Vu...
Also, NewsRadio was an awesome show!!! How come all the best things in life get canceled -
So I just have to make sure that the hard drive is ATA and not SATA correct? Any IDE Ultra and ATA-6 will work? Correct?
GO BLUE! -
Correct.

I am trying to replace a Fujitsu Model # MHV2100AT Drive, and I noticed the pins don't look anything like what I am seeing on newegg.com. Just wondering if this will not work. I picked up this Toshiba Notebook from a friend of mine in Japan.
-
I don't think any US notebook Hard Drive will work. The pins look nothing like what I see in all the Newegg.com pictures. Anyone know if I am just not seeing something?
-
What orginal HD do you have? And what HD are planning to get?
JC -
My original HD is a Fujitsu model# MHV2100AT, 4200rpm, ATA-6, But the pins look nothing like the pins featured on any of the drives Newegg.com offers. I wish I had a digital camera to show, but I'm too poor.
-
Ok, hmm, this is what your original HD look like, based upon research.
This is one of the ATA-6 HD from newegg.
Its looks pretty ok to me.
Hmm, I am just wondering, from your original HD, are you missing 4 pins at the end?
JC -
Mine has no gaps and no individual pins that stick out. The best way to describe it is the HD itself has a slot(female connector) on the side and then sticks into the notebook (male connector). I do not see any indiviual pins that stick out.
If it helps, the HD came out of a Toshiba Dynabook, A80 Series, model #TX/570LSBB -
Does your HD look like this?

Actually no. Sorry. I was poking around the hardrive and noticed that there is a plastic casing around the pins of the hard drive so maybe the other drives will work it's just that mine has some sort of plastic harness around the pins. Again, it's hard to describe especially when I can't show a picture.
-
Bummer. Sorry, I cant help you.

Here are some pictures of both the HD and the notebook connection.

Its looks to me that the HD is in another case, because on the second picture, I looked at the borders of the HD, its looks like its not the HD itself, and its a some sort of case.
Look at the borders at this HD...
So its looks to me, that the HD is inside some sort of case that needs to be taken out to change the HD.

Looks like the HD is in some kind of caddy, maybe to make it hot-swappable? You probably need to remove that first.
-
You guys are the best!!!! I'll try working on that right now.
-
Here are two more pictures with the case removed. Now, my only question is will the new HD come with the predrilled holes as you can see in the pictures so I can place the casing back on the new HD?

Does anyone know of some great deals on HD's right now?
-
As for bargin HD, well it is depends on what do you need, like rpm and gb.
JC -
I was looking for something no smaller than 80GB, and with a 5400 rpm
-
Do you have a price range?
I suggest that take a look at newegg's hd, they are excellent and cheap.
JC -
Yeah I love Newegg.com and have checked out some of their HD's but just didn't know what a deal was. Most of the HD seem like it's a 1-1 ratio between GB and Dollars. I just didn't know if someone knew of a great deal or weekend deal going on at Newegg or Zipzoomfly. I'm trying to be lazy now.
My max would be around $100, cheaper is always better. -
Here's a couple of good ones:
Fujitsu---use Google checkout for $10 discount (hassle free! from Google! it's worth it). My experience with the one notebook Fujitsu HDD was very good. It lasted well until I got a little too excited gaming...lets leave it at that.
Western Digital---looks like a great deal. I would buy this myself if I didn't just plop down $90 for one of their external HDD/enclosure solutions. -
Ok, so $100, including shipping and handling and tax (if there is)?
If so, I suggest that you take a look at pricegrabber.com and if you got a spacific hd that you like, just type the model number, for example "WD1200VE" and it give you the lowest price of that model ($88.99), and showed you what is the price per GB, in this case $.74 per GB. And it will tell you what is the cost for shipping and handling if you enter your zip code.
There, get busy.
