Guys I wanted your help in selecting between one of the aforementioned processors

Is it worthwhile to go for the 3610qm or the 3720qm

All I can see on Intels website is

The bus:core ratio diff btw the 2
The 300 MHz diff btw the 2 proc.
The 100 MHz diff btw the 2 igp speeds

Thing is I am an old school guy (back when proc.speeds were imp.) plus I am a casual gamer and intend to play titles (anywhere in upwards of 12x8 to FHd) that will launch for the NXT 2 yrs. Since these are mobile procs and I really don't like OC, and will mostly be using the IGP for display purposes and occ gaming on dgpu (7970m) would it make a lot of diff.selecting one of the 2

    I would like
    Quad (ht enabled)
    1600mhz rams supporting processor
    3.1 pciex

The rig may well be an AW m17xr4 unless the SAMSUNG has a better built ivy bridge (gamer) laptop

Today's processors are more than enough for gaming, and the 3610 is more than adequate.. The GPU is the most important part for gaming. The price difference from the 3610 to 3720 is quite large and would be best spent on a SSD.

    That.

That is your answer, pure and simple. If it's not a ULV, any i7 is adequate for gaming. What you'll want to spend the extra money on is, like s2odin said: an SSD.

ah, well i already have an SSD (samsung 830) and a 750GB (5400 rpm WDC) as well as the kingston KVR's (the grey metal HS... 1600mhz) as well..... would you still not recommend the 3720qm over the 3610qm?

    No.
The 3610qm is more than enough - no point in spending lots of money on 300Mhz difference that you (for all accounts and purposes) won't even notice.

The only reason anyone would get the 3720 over the 3610 is if they do a lot of virtualization. Other than that there isn't a good reason to get it.

Thank you all who took the time to answer

I think I will select the 3610qm and use the rest of the money to upgrade to 2 yrs warranty on an AW if required

You won't regret it. In practice the difference is even lower than the 300mhz gap because they can both automatically overclock to >=3ghz when needed (that's what turbo mode is). The i7-3610qm is ~20% faster than its predecessor (i7-2670qm) which was already more than adequate for gaming. It's just the best mobile CPU currently out there for the money you pay.

Well in the alienwares you can overclock the 3720qm as it is partially unlocked another 400mhz (the 3610qm can't) leaving a frequency difference of 700mhz accross the board which will have an impact with the 7870M and future cards.

    3610qm
    3.3/3.2/3.1/3.1

    vs

    3720qm (overclocked)
    4.0/3.9/3.8/3.8

Just keep in mind that those boost speeds are only enabled if the laptop's thermals can dissipate the heat.

I didn't know that about the i7-3720qm. Still I probably wouldn't consider it for the purpose of gaming. A 3ghz (with turbo enabled) quad-core Ivy Bridge should already be plenty even for a 7970M or whatever comes after imo.

3720 is underestimated, and 3610 / 3612 is great value

Would that require special RAMS? Cuz I don't intend to spend anymore than I already have (I have 8gb of grey KVR's and a 256 gb 830 ssd) not to mention i live Australia where base prices of electronics generally talk to the moon

Nope, it's only changing the multi on the CPU and no changes needed to voltages either. It just runs at that.
