4 means there are four slots for memory in the system board, 2 means there are two. The biggest single memory stick available right now is 4GB, so for 16GB for ram you need 4 slots.

So why is 2 dimm more expensive than 4 dimm on malibal? Wouldnt you want to have 4 dimm so that the motherboard has more slots open for additional ram?

No. If you have 4 slots total and 2 dimms you would still have 2 slots available. If you have 4 dimms, then you would have 0 slots available.

Not true dude!!! Look here and Here!

My M18x and the M17x from Alienware will support up to 32Gb. And I have seen a Dell workstation lappy support 64Gb I believe.

Laptops are maximum 32GB since there are 8GB SODIMMs with 4 slots.

My bad, I should have said "reasonably priced". Those are both system pulls, new ones cost almost a grand a stick.

Ya, but 8GB sticks are rediculous and no need at a consumer level. You need Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate OS to even recognize over 16GB of RAM.

If You just working on your laptop you can use 2GB, but 4GB will be much better.
For gaming 8 GB it's a minimum for today, i think 2x8 good choice, it will be enough for any programs\games and it's not too much.

2x8 will cost you over $1000 while 4x4 will cost you over $100. Big difference. And for gaming, you don't need more than 4GB. Good luck even finding 8GB sticks for a laptop as well.

Edit: Not sure if you notice this or not, but 2x8 means Two 8GB sticks for 16GB total.
