What's the difference between these two types?, for example GTX 1080 and GTX 1080M (both for laptop). Is the non-M version a full version of the GPU?

Top is possibly MSI or other board, bottom is CLEVO board.

Different physical dimensions, vBios and TDP among other things.

No, both cards pictured are full GTX 1080 cards. If anything, the one on the right is faster since it has a higher power limit (190W vs. 150W ). There is no 1080M, but there is a 1080 Max-Q, which is not available in MXM and is lower power limit (110W) and lower performance. Essentially the old -M cards in principle.

The only full blown GTX 1080 from MSI is the ones found in the GT73VR / GT75VR and the Vortex G65VR

Are they all compatible with each other?, the MSI could work into a Clevo motherboard?

No, only the slot is the same. The form factors and any external power connectors are different.

Assuming that the required physical modification are made to the laptop and the power connector pin out is matched, could it work in any other motherboard or are they also locked by BIOS to work only on the original motherboard?

The clevo GTX 1080 need external power , while the full blown MSI GTX 1080 need/not need power , even though there is supplied power connector for the GT73VR and GT75VR , but for the MSI Vortex G65VR , it does not need additional power as the Vortex don't have power limit on the MXM slot.

if you want to use a GTX 1080 , the above pictured is the one you want to get , but you have to make your own heat sink.

Depending on the laptop involved, you may also need to additionally mod the MXM circuitry to supply power to some unused pins.

    Example: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ix-gets-an-8700k-and-gtx-1080-upgrade.814711/

Seems it solely depends on the GPU model itself, thanks both!
