    Is it possible to buy 2 512 MB RAM in the notebook, then take out 1 of those cards and replace it with a 1 GB stick instead?

    Yes it is possible. If you can it would be advisable to buy one stick leaving the other slot open.

    some laptop have 1 slot ram integrated like the thinkpad x40
    but most can
