Last June 2008 I purchased a TOSHIBA NOTEBOOK, computer.

To begin with we only used this computer for games, so we did not know a problem existed with it. This winter I started to use it to type up some documents. As I was typing, the letters would jump from the middle of a word backwards up in the middle of a word or a sentence I already typed. The more I typed the worse it got. It was impossible to type a whole paragraph. :( I have a years warranty on it so I sent it back to be fixed. First they claimed they fixed it, but it came back in the same condition (the letters are still jumping from the middle of a word backwards up in the middle of a word or a sentence) The second time they sent it back they claimed they put in a new keyboard. It came back in the same condition, with the same problem. I sent it back again, and it was sent back with this statement on the repair sheet. "re imaged then disabled tapping while typing. "Your thumbs are hitting the touch pad while typing, and this is a common problem with this unit". To my disappointment it was still doing the same thing. And so it goes, NOTHING WAS FIXED. :( I had someone test the computer, and they have the same problem when they type. Their thumbs were not hitting the touch pad, and my thumbs are not hitting the touch pad. Enough is ENOUGH! If this computer is not fixed right or replaced with a new computer, that works properly. I am going to contact The Consumer Advocates and the Better Business Bureau.

The problem should be fixable. The weight of your hands could be causing your touchpad to become active.
Go into control panel and set the sensitivity to very low by selecting "heavy touch"
If that does not fix the problem, try physically unplugging the touchpad from the motherboard (you will have to remove your keyboard to do this)

If the problem still exists when the touchpad is removed the problem is either the keyboard or the system is just bugged

Dude, K-tron is right. This is an issue with all notebooks, not just Toshiba.

Try disabling the touchpad while you type, with the keyboard shortcut (usually an Fn+F? combination).

Every notebook I have ever used has had this issue. It is just a problem that arises from an inherent but necessary design flaw of locating the touchpad in front of the keyboard. The "clown nose" mouse pointers will do the same thing if you hit them while typing.

hmm... never had that problem. if changing the sensativity works i think the product is ok, but if he has to unplug it completely i think there is a problem and the product should be considered faulty...
