Are there any other Hard Drives in the same class as the 7k60? I keep hearing it is one of, if not the best one out there right now in terms of performance. Are there any drives on the horizon that might compete?

On newegg.com they have Toshiba hard drives with 16MB cache size. Does anyone have one of these drives? Is there a noticeable improvement in performance?

According to various reviews, this drive has a high burst rate because of its large cache, but it falls behind in transfer rate once the cache is exhausted.

    I bought a Toshiba MK8026GAX (5400rmp,80G,16M buffer) to replace a (hitachi 4200rmp,60G, 8M) in my toshiba notebook.
The new one is faster, but hotter & feel more spinning/vibration from the HD on the plam area !

I purchased the Hitachi 7K100 80gig. I was coming from a 4200rpm model. It's worth the money. The power consumption is 10% higher, for a 100% increase in speed and 50% increase in actual productivity. Not waiting on the drive, all the time. A strange thing, is that the HD temp dropped 5-10 deg C lower than the 4200rpm.

Dell has the comparison between these two types of HD. Watching it, 7200 is about 2-4 secs faster.

Why do some of the brand new model notebooks have hard drives with a speed of 4200RPM? Others have a speed of 5400RPM.

I'm looking at 15" models in the $1000 range and don't understand why notebooks at this price have slower hard drives. Thanks for any insights.

Why do some CPU's have a speed of 1.8 Ghz and some have a speed of 2.0 Ghz and some have a speed of 2.4 Ghz?

Obviously, you want the fastest one you can get that provides the capacity you need. You want 7200 rpm. 5400 rpm is adequate for most people. 4200 rpm hard drive is sloooooooooow and no fun at all.

The hard drive is THE slowest component in any pc. You want the fastest one you can get as it affects overall system performance no matter what applications you plan to use.
