Hi,,,,i have an new HP and i have problem with my resolution. I only have 2 choices for my resolution, 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600. My graphic card run on an Generic Pnp monitor on standard vga graphics and that's the only choice i have. The screen is way too big on the 800x600 and ways too strech on the 1024x768 resolution. Is there someone who can help me pls ????

You need to install the correct graphics driver.

I am on Vista right now but W7 should be similar. Go to empty area of desktop. Right click bottom of drop down click "personalize" in screen that pops up click "display settings" (for me at the bottom). Pop up window bottom right click "advanced". In new pop up window bottom left click "List all modes". In new pop up pick/highlight the resolution you want. Click OK now back at display screen click apply. Setting should take affect.
Edit: This assumes available resolutions are hidden. As said above if you have only the generic drivers you need drivers? Try what I said for kicks. -

ive check on the list but it only give me the same two resolution and an 640x480,,,,it was fine before, i just rebooted it !!!

Geez mate you aren't understanding properly. You need to install the right graphics drivers for your laptop to view all the resolutions you can use.
If you have a Nvidia video card then go to the nvidia website and put in what type of display card you have. Then download the drivers, install them and everything will be fine.
If you have an ATI card do the same thing except with their website.
Same thing with Intel as well if you just have a generic Intel card.. -
These guys are right for whatever reason you are running with the generic drivers. Their suggestions would work. I would go to the HP site and get model specific drivers. That is what I would do I know others disagree. Or use the driver disk if it came with.
There are other things you can try. These are meant for those who might not be so comfortable with computers. If you have not shutdown since you restarted do a forced shutdown. Hold the power button down tell system powers down. Then restart, this goes to the last boot that was followed by a proper shutdown. I have used this many times when settings have gone wonkie. No guarantee it will work but very painless. If you have shutdown and restarted since this happened it will not help.
You can also go in device manager find display go to update driver and see if any are found. -
Definitely the best plan IMO. Updating the driver to the latest one made by the manufacturer of the card rather than your system OEM is only for advanced tinkerers, or if you're trying to solve a particular issue or incompatibility. In 99% of cases the computer should be viewed as a 'black box' by the end user so if it says HP on it, get all the drivers from HP.

Except OEMs like HP rarely update the graphics drivers. nVidia and ATI both release Mobility/notebook drivers now, ATI on a monthly basis. That's your best choice if you have a card from them, and there's not a whole lot a reason to use OEM provided drivers because they are simply snapshots of what the hardware vendors puts out but at an older date. Features and graphics performance are being enhanced considerably on a continuous basis so get the latest you can. If you have Intel integrated graphics, you're stuck with whatever HP releases...

They don't need to 'update' the drivers to support windows xp... lots of vista, win7 drivers can be made to support xp. He should be able to find them if he even bothers to try and knows how to do a google search.
