For some reason my laptop's LCD does not want to switch off unless I power down the entire machine. I have it set to turn off the display after 30 min and it just stays on. Even if I close the lid, it continues to stay on. I removed the old drivers and used driversweep, then installed the latest Nvidia drivers and...still no go.

I got this executable called monitoroff.exe or something, and if I click on it it turns off the display, so at least I know it's not a hardware issue. I've done a lot of searching but came up with nothing. I don't have any microsoft peripherals so it's not that either. I'm using Win7....

I don't have any ideas.... does anyone? Anything would be highly appreciated!

I'm thinking this could be a Windows/driver issue. A quick test would be to download a bootable live-cd version of Linux (Knoppix, for example) and to see if you can replicate the problem. If it happens exactly the same under Linux, it would certainly indicate either a very low-level software problem (bios, perhaps) or a hardware issue.

Restart and enter BIOS setup ... now lower the lid slowly and see if it turns off when the lid is almost down. If it does then you know it's a software setting problem (power saving option) and it's not the lid switch on the motherboard. Also you could try an external monitor with single output to monitor only. The screen has to turn off at some point.

It works fine in the bios.... again, it's a software issue because using monitoroff.exe it works fine.... and the display isn't turning off after 15 minutes like it should through Win7.

    Any other ideas?
