Funny you mention the WD Scorpio I was eyeing the new 300gb one earlier... Only found it for sale in one place tho so far... for 300$...

I love my WD Caviler 16mb cache in my desktop it has been with me for about 2.5 years now under SUPER heavy use (I download like a movie a day and leave it uploading at 150kb/s all day to share the wealth) Its also totally silent.

I have no idea where to go to see the reply(s) to this message. Would you (whoever) give me some pointers?

I just bought coolmax. I want to make an external hard drive. I have the hard drive and read what to buy from the do it yourself making an external hard drive guide.

I have no idea what I am doing or going to do. I'm so afraid that I'm going to mess up or don't have the correct items.

I'm new and don't know any of the terms that people use. Bare with me. I didn't get the adapter with the coolmax, will I need it?

    Tom ,

All you have to do is verify what adapter type you have in the enclosure :
IDE ( also called ATA 100/133 ) looks like pins or SATA looks like tabs .

If you are not sure check the spec of your enclosure , you might also want to compare the cost of the HD with a ready made product .

Good luck and welcome to NBR .

Great thread and guide here gilo (+rep :D)

    One question though

I am thinking of building an external drive myself and want to know whether the process of putting together a 3.5" drive is any different to the guide??

    Thanks

Not really , some enclosures will even support both sizes . 2.5" drives are my favorites though since to date they offer the best balance of portability and performance as well as allowing you to exchange with the often mediocre drive you get with your laptop , gl .

    I know what you mean

The only problem is that here, where I live 2.5" drives are waaaay more expensive than 3.5" drives of the same capacity.
    Even OEM ones.

That's why I will probably go with an external 3.5"
    Thanks for your feedback

The general consensus is that WD, seagate and hitachi are best

You would get a better opinion if you posted a new thread in the hardware forum
Or just search because there are already quite a few threads like that out there already

hi ther gilo... well its seems to be an unappropriate area to post it, and since the thread regarding the pentium m pin mod has been closed, i had to resort to this option... is it possible i might contact you in person for that matter... i'd really appreciate your time to acknowledge this message at [email protected], for i couldn't find any of your contacts to do it myself... i await your response, please advise.

(by the way i have tried the mod, and have certain observations i intend to ask/infrom you about, especially about the pin B2 on the 479 package...)

    regards,
    hamxza

Whatever it is that prevents hamxza from posting his issue here is

He doesn't sound like anybody I'd willingly email.

well, first @ batman, no need to worry i am not the joker next door... just thought must not interrupt the ongoing thread with a somewhat different subject...

however, the real issue here is, i have a pentium m 735a, which i obviously tried to pinmod/voltmod.. but unfortunately no success. i have a 915gm alviso motherboard on an acer aspire 1640z system. i have been through the content available on the internet regarding the overclocking stuff, but most of it is promising when it comes to the lower end systems, i.e a max top speed of 1.6G is more likely to get an OC this way... and another observation i had, that there are 479 pins on the processor (unlike the 478 ones that do get an OC mostly) that i have, with a redundant pin labelled as B2 (which according to the data sheet of the processor is depopulated...) i just wondered, would it be any harm to VSS(ground) this port??? so that the processor might do as the other processor workout...

    your suggestions are appreciated.

How, if I may ask, is your question related in anyway to the topic of the thread

Open a new thread in the correct sub-forum to get proper help

I apologize for the previous suspicion, hamxza. You are clearly a normal dude, even if you may have a Compulsive Capitalization Disorder (just kidding, you probably posted from a cell phone or something, it's all good).

I do suggest that you use the private message function here, however. Clicking on a user's name on the left side of their post opens up their personal information page. From there, if there's an email posted, you can try to contact them that way; more preferably, you can send a "PM", or private message, to the user.

Posts with email addresses are generally frowned upon compared to PM's, because of scamming/virus possibilities, as I understand NBR's take on the matter.

Again, my apologies, and best of luck in finding an answer!

    Regards,
    Batman
