Right now my WD Scorpio Blue (5400RPM) Is at 47c just browsing on NBR, with nothing else really going on.
When I have uTor running and am watching a movie or doing a lot of browsing, it gets around the 55c mark, and when I play a game it gets up over 65c.
Sometimes it just gets around 65c for no reason, this is when I change the power profile on my laptop to let the CPU use 100% of it's power, which the CPU promptly jumps up to around 100c, 80c IDLE. I don't understand that either.
Anyways I was shopping for a faster HDD and saw that SSD prices are lower for the 128GB so I thought about getting a G.Skill.
What temps so they tend to idle at, and what is the full load temps in general?
Is the temp thing a big problem?

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Well, first of all, the temps on your WD are unusually high. 55 is already high, 65 is somewhat ridiculous. Maybe you should consider cleaning out your thermal solution?
That being said, depending on the SSD you are looking at, the power consumption can be somewhat lower, or significantly higher than that of your WD. Most Samsung drives are known to be very good with power, while Intel and simple JMicron drives tend to consume about the same amount of juice as a 5400RPM drive. The Mtrons are a little warmer, but it's the G.Skill Titans and OCZ Apex drives that really heat up.
What G.Skill drive specifically are you looking at? -

Well I'm looking for a 128GB SSD or even a really good 64GB SSD.
The G/Skill Titan was nice, but the regular cheaper once seems good for now.
I dunno whats wrong with this laptop it's a HP DV4 1220US, It runs so hot if I don't limit the CPU, even while doing nothing. When I got it it was fine, second week it just got to be like this.
I've only owned it for two months anyways.
I'm looking to spend under $250 unless it's something awesome.
I'd like a Samsung but their expensive right now anyways.
I don't really care about power usage, this laptop only gets like 2 hours battery so it's not like I really take it anywhere. I just wanna stop burning my lap watching an episode of 24, or reading an ebook.
I understand it heats up when I play a game, but sometimes when I'm not covering the vents or anything, just reading a book with no background stuff running and no internet connection causes it to flip out. -
yeah those temps are pretty darn high... at geeks.com you can pick up a samsung SLC 64gb for 199$ and use a coupon "techbargains" (with or without the "s" on the end i forget) for an additional 10% off

geeks.com is on my s-list right now. I got a HDD dock from them for $37 and I used it 3 times and it broke.
They made me pay to ship it back, and now over a week later (I got delivery confirmation) they have yet to get back with me or offer any resolution for my RMA.
In a best case scenario they send me a new one and it works and I had to pay $47 for it instead of $37 and deal with all this trouble, and currently its looking like they are not going to do anything at all.
Just a heads up, as when somebody gets pushed around the rest of you should know how a company behaves. -
Too bad geeks.com is sold out
Yeah I have to be careful where I buy from, I'm in Beijing right now so I have to reship, and if it's broke, I'd need to ship crap everywhere.
Funny especially considering I could just walk it down to the factory but NO. That can't happen.
It's like with Lenovo, the shop is next to the factory (I used to live near it I think) and the prices for cumputers in the shop were 40% more than what you'd pay in the US LOL -

Might want to consider this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233075&Tpk=128gb corsair
It's a ways more expensive than the $250 you want to spend, but it's a Samsung re-brand with solid performance. 128GB to boot, despite being MLC. -
Yeah I was looking at that one.
I'm going to save for a Samsung MLC, and get the SLC if I get sick of saving lol.
I just hope vista will fit on a 64gb drive. Right now With all the space saving tweaks, there is 80gb+ space missing on my HDD. I deleted the restore points/hibernate/page files, shadow copy this, unstalled that, deleted everything every guide told me to delete.
Do SSDs Generate the same amount of heat as traditional HDDs?
