Do you like to have the air vent at the back side instead of right/left side in laptops?
I love to see the air vents at the back side. Please vote for your choice.
Let me show you three positive points of having air vents at the rear/back side.
1. You can use the laptop for reading when you are lying on bed by holding the left or right side of the laptop downward. Agronomic ease.
2. Can be hold a laptop from the right and left sides while running if there is no vents at left or right.
3. Symmetrical design, so looks and feels good.
All Ultrabooks have the air vents at the back side. Also having vents at the back side may have better cooling system and comfortable temperature at the palm area.

^you have got to be kidding me....just get a tablet and put your reading material in dropbox.
but ya, generally side-venting lappys are more likely to bother someone sitting by you.
one time, someone sat next to me when i was away from my seat and their left-venting lappy melted my chocolate bar. i was not amused -_-. -
As long as the cooling is effective, it doesn't matter to me.

I love it at the back. It makes it look so much better. Also they seem to generally be bigger/have the option of CPU and GPU having independent vents when placed at the back as compared to the side.
If the vent is on the right side, thats an auto no go for me. Makes using a USB mouse really annoying. No reason to have a hot lap and a hot hand. lol -

I like when the went is at the back the most, but the left-rear side is fine. As long as the vent isn't aimed at the surface its placed on like my old HP Pavilion dv5, then I'm ok. That was a pretty retarded design because it meant you couldn't really put it on your bed without severly choking the vent. Recent Toshibas have their vent on the right side, instead of the left.
My E425 OTH has a vents on the left & back rear side of the notebook & it does a great job (now that I think about it, my old dv5 had dual vents at the rear right side). I can be in bed & the vents do not get blocked easily. Also if I'm just reading something in bed, I can shut off the fan completely with TPFanControl, lower all the clocks & voltages to reduce heat output even more so I can comfortably hold the case at any spot. Also, I can either set my display to landscape or portrait & open the lid 180 degrees. I know Lenovo has an accelerometer in some notebooks that detects when the notebook is turned on its side & automatically rotates the desktop. Pretty cool, I never actually tried it though.
One of the coolest designs I've seen is in this really old (Windows 98/2k) Gateway laptop I have, that that I don't actually use, that has the vent right above the keyboard (just above the F keys) where most laptops nowadays have the speakers. The heat is vented upwards by a litte fan & setting that laptop on a bed would pose zero problems. In the winter this could be the perfect hand-warmer-upper! If the laptop stayed ON with the lid closed that would block the vent completely & be really bad. But then again, the computer would probably go sleep when the lid is closed so it should be ok, I think. Another design I like is how certain new notebooks take in air from the keyboard. That's a smart idea. Just don't go spilling drinks all over your laptop! Lol id also love to see more OEMs use dual fan setups like Gigabyte or Apple & some of the high end gaming notebooks.

I didn't realize the poll was about using a laptop for e-reading sideways, lol. Cooling systems aren't really designed to dissipate heat sitting sideways but I guess if you're just reading it shouldn't tax the system much anyhow. Buy a Kindle for $69.

Well it's not strictly about sideways reading. The OP was just noting the possible benefits of one placement over another.
I prefer my vents on the left side. -
right-side venting is freaking ridiculous...what kinda worker are you if you don't realize people like to use mice with their laptop.*
*sorry lefties, i am discriminating against you and i have no problem with that;P

Here is symmetrical interior of a Samsung 9 series 13.3 inch laptop.

Now a days a lot of models are setting their air vent at the rear side. It's nice.
-
just wondering which laptops have the best interior design -
It's tricky to go symmetrical when you have a 100W dGPU...
Otherwise it's fine. -
-
yah, here is another one, the MacBook-Pro-Inside, looks nicely done the inside job to make it as symmetrical as possible
