I am in a quandry about the glossy vs.matte. What I did on the G73JH was to buy the Viewguard" matte screen protector. It has worked very well for over a year now. I don't see my face on the screen and I can actually touch the screen if needed with no fingerprints. I just contacted Xotic today to change from the 70% gamut matte to the 90% gamut glossy. I "believe" the 90% screen will be better for photog'ing. I will get the Viewguard and install on the screen. That way, I have the option to go back if I want to. As others have stated also, I really really dislike glossy finishes.

I think some people prefer glossy because glossy screens sold on notebooks now tend to have more contrast than their matte counterparts, giving them better image quality. A good matte screen however with a lot of contrast is just as good as glossy one if not better because you don't get the reflections. Something like the ThinkPad T60 UXGA would be an example of this. It is a stunning LCD. A good matte screen is still hard to get, though things are getting better.

I have had and use both and must say I definitely prefer glossy! The image quality is much better and crisp, whereas especially with some dust on it, reflections never bother me. I never use laptops outdoors however! I can imagine that if I were to, I might prefer a matte.
But for indoor usage - definitely glossy!! The quality is 10 times better. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Glossy screens are the worst invention ever. You can't see anything in sunlight and it is a fingerprint magnet. No thank you, I will pay extra for a matte screen.

moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
I am indifferent, both are good.
-
matte, its bad enough i have to see myself in the mirror everyday...don't want to see myself in front of my laptop too
-
prefer glossy on a desktop, matte on a notebook.
-
I prefer matte, I can't stand reflections when I'm working in photoshop.
I'm so close to pulling the trigger on a matte screen off eBay but I have a sneaky feeling the quality won't be there. -
For some reason I have never had such a problem with glossy screens and this is my 3rd laptop with glossy.
I can't stand the grainy image quality on matte screens however.
Both have pro-s and con-s, BUT - something very important - you can always make a glossy screen - matte (with filter) but can't make a matte screen look as good as glossy !!
So I intentionally avoid matte screens. Would always prefer the crispy image of the glossy screens. -
The only thing glossy is good for is checking to see if someone is sneaking up on you...
Matte all the way! Thank God Im selling my last glossy screen very soon. -
Definetly matte. This is the only REAL choice.
-
I actually prefer glossy screen as far as overall clarity goes, only thing I get annoyed at is when/if you have to clean them, as It takes me a good 10 minutes to get it right on my laptop >_>
Most of the time if I'm caught with sun I just move away from the sunlight and out the way. Most Matte displays look slightly sparkly/fuzzy to me, depending on who makes it
And i've seen some matte displays can't you can't read in sunlight either, so meh. -
Prefer the better image quality of glossy. However matte is the most prevalent in the high end screens, so often that's just what I make do with.
But if a choice, glossy is nice. -
-
I would have to say Matte without a question as I hate Glossy with a passion, if I had no choice but to purchase glossy, you can best believe I'll be buying an Anti-Glare Screen Protector on top of it. I don't about you guys but I'm not entirely thrilled about these 16:9 resolutions we have been getting, I prefer the older 16:10...
-
Of course not all matte screens are the same. I've seen some I could make my peace with. But the average matte screen gives that grainy image that I can't stand! It's like looking through a window with artistic foil on it - you see good enough to know what's going on but no details.
But again - both have their pros and cons, I just never have any reflection problem with my glossy screen... I guess not all glossy screens are the same either!
And as I said - you can always make it matte with a simple filter (even one you can put only when you need it) whereas matte remains grainy no matter what. -
I am getting the upgraded SUPER glossy 90% gamut screen, then I will install the matte screen protector from Viewguard. I love the finish on my G73JH -
Let me know what you think of that viewguard protector. Have any coupon codes for free shipping or anything?
-
lol i can`t even remember how matte screen was. Been using glossy for many years now after OEMs started forcing it to us. First i was "No way im using that reflecting screen" but sadly i was given no choice.
Worth to say that the reflective screens varies a whole lot between the different laptop brands. Some are reflective as hell almost like a mirror, while other isn`t that bad. I remember using a HP and it was almost horrible, while this Asus laptop i am using now is way better -
Star Forge Quaggan's Creed Redux!
Matte. I have used glossy's for a while and I can tell you that they are so hard to see due to the reflections and the fingerprints are a pain. Sure you might get better color gamut, but all of that is ruined by the touchy surface.
A good matte screen from the corporate notebook line still makes it up with a good screen and color gamut to boot and the added touch of color heaven if you can afford the IPS. -
Matte was one of the reasons I bought a Thinkpad. My desktop LCD is also matte. Voted matte.
-
I prefer a low reflection glossy screen.
Not all the glossy screens have the same amount of reflectivity. Some look pretty much like matte screens, some look like not much different than a mirror.

I tell you what, the anti-reflective protector screen from viewguard is great! I have it on my G73JH and my wife is getting that laptop when my 8170 arrives and I move in to it. She told me DO NOT REMOVE MATTE FINISH. After all, she said get the 8170 ... she is moving from a Toshiba P25 with a matte finish and does not want to go back to the glossy finish that was on her HP DV9000 (that blowed up!). When I went from the glossy screen on the G73 to the matte protector, the glare was considerably reduced and the brightness, color and contrast were not affected that much. As to the viewing angles, I never view from angles so that is not a factor. I do all kinds of photo editing and CGI rendering and am very pleased with the screen. I also have the option if I want to go back to the glossy (crazy idea!) I can just peel it off and reuse it if I want. One must be very careful when installing tho, if there is a bubble or a piece of dust, one will see it. It took two tries and I got it right. For $32 or so, it was a nice investment. Protects the screen and also if I need to, I can touch the screen with no worries.

That procedure sounds crazy, but it works pretty good. Almost guaranteed a good protector look. Just afraid to do it with a 17" screen as the 11" was bad enough! lol. -
Matte, matte, matte and matte.
I hate glossy. -
My old laptop is maté and my SZ is more glossy, although not really glossy.
I think some "glossyness" is good, but not too much. -
-
The problem is that not all finishes are created equally... there are some craptastic glossy and matte screens and there are some great ones. From what I believe to be good glossy and matte screens, I prefer glossy since I had little difficulty using my glossy notebook in the bright Caribbean and did not experience the many negatives that others have seen with glossy screens.
-
Now that I think about it - I used to have problems with my first glossy screen quite often - reflections everywhere, no matter what. Now - I can't think of any such case with my current laptop... I work with it in the office, at home, in different countries under different light conditions... never did I experience any inconvenience whatsoever...
At the same time every time I look at the Lenovo T400 I also use, I see what enormous difference there is in the quality of picture, caused by the matte finish of the Lenovo- awful grainy image that you come to realize once you look at the glossy screen on the other laptop and say "WOW" ...
And again - the biggest advantage of the glossy screens to me are that you can have both worlds - a filter fixes the reflective surface (if it bothers you) in a second and can be used only when needed. Matta on the other hand remains lousy no matter whether you currently need it to be matte or not...
In fact I don't know how it is now, but my previous laptop was offered both with matte screen and with "Crystal-view" glossy screen, whereas the glossy variant cost extra... I was happy to pay for it though, once I had the chance to compare the image of both. -
I've only dealt with glossy laptops as repairs, but that little bit of experience is enough to make me stay far away. I've never experienced the grain factor some folks talk about with a matte screen, and it wouldn't bother me at all compared to the frustration of seeing my face and overhead lighting when trying to work on glossy screens. I "will" be fighting for a matte IPS screen in the future, though. My X201 doesn't bother me, but I've seen pictures of the AFFS mod, and it's more than enough to convince me I want that.
-
Lenovo T has a few qualities.... but the screen is by far not one of them
Or maybe Vaio is in fact putting the expectation quite high...
-
My desktop's monitor is glossy, and initially I didn't mind it at all. However as I started to use it for long periods of work it became more and more annoying. The eye strain after a few hours is very counterproductive, often causing me to switch to my laptop if I can. It's solid for gaming and pretty nice for multimedia, but other than that I'll take matte any day of the week.
-
I remember when Glossy screens were a premium option, most laptops at the time came with Matte screens as standard. I'm looking at our 7 year old Dell Inspiron 510m which came with a Matte screen since it was quite costly having a Glossy option (TrueLife I think...) back then.
Oh how times changed, you can't help but see a wave of Glossy screens when you go to a electrical store for notebooks nowadays! -
Glossy ≠ quality
Matte ≠ crappy
Since glossy screens became standard the quality has diminished greatly in general. Partially because the screens seemed to suffer the fate of cheap laptops, it's the cheapest screen they can find so people can get 2GB graphics memory in their GT 210m GPU for marketing purposes.
Matte screens can look just as nice, especially if the contrast is good. My new Sager has a glossy screen, and it's only ~ 50% color gamut with somewhat crappy contrast. Actually had it measured by a local Clevo reseller (can't remember what the contrast was) but it was crap compared to other screens. The matte screen replacement had much better contrast with the same color gamut and looked awesome. Plus lack of reflection made the color stand out more IMHO.
There's more to a screen than matte and glossy, but IMHO matte has the bonus of no reflectivity. -
Anyone know where I can get a really good quality matte replacement for my Asus K52f? I found some on ebay, but don't want to chance getting a cheap quality screen.
-
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Wow Sager only has a 50% color gamut panel? There were a couple other Clevo resellers which offer like 98% color gamut panels, I think Mythlogic?
-
XoticPC offers a 92% glossy and a matte finish. I guess we'll never get the matte tho
-
I think the default panel is like 65% or something, but mine after calibration was about 50%. I'm not sure how that all works. In any case it looks better than most screens I'm used to though, and since I got to see the 92% and matte screen first hand I can say I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money. It may be important to some, but really wouldn't matter so much to me. I ordered a matte screen protector for $25, better than $250!

Do you prefer a glossy or matte screen?
