    looks like cheapo thermal pads that HP used instead of proper thermal paste

    LOL, looks like dried up thermal paste or thermal pads. Use a good brand of thermal paste such as AS5 or shin etsu ;) Whatever it is, remove it :eek:

    Thermal pad should be fine for the southbridge.

    Those pads will be killing your SB sooner or later,remove it before it goes for good :p
