I have two 4gb ram stick from my old laptops. And my current laptop has only one 4gb stick. So does "wrong ram stick" exist? Can I just but my old sticks to my current laptop? Could those harm my laptop somehow? And why there is so many ram sticks?

Harm? Probably not. They may not work though or you may not be able to insert them altogether. What kind of DDR memory did your old laptop have? DDR revisions are not backwards compatible so DDR2 RAM modules won't fit into DDR3 lots. Other than that, AFAIK, any standard memory should fit into your laptop. The speed at which your module will run will be decided by your CPU. Some CPUs support 1600 MHz, others support up to 1333. I think mobile SB only supported up to 1333 while IVB could do 1600. RAM modules need to run at the same speed. So if you put 1333 memory and if your laptop came with 1600, then both would run at 1333.

at work we had one that was plugged in wrong or something it got hot and caught the label on it on fire, surprisingly the laptop still worked after that.

I recall 1 DDR400 RAM didn't want to work in DDR333 laptop (I expected it downclock). SO I hot plugged it with another stick. And while booting Windows I smelled something... That RAM became hot like 150 degrees Celsium! Stupid RAM :( Stupid Corsair. Why they usually miss some JEDEC profiles while creating SPD?

You hotplugged RAM and something went wrong... I don't think it's the RAM to blame.

I KNEW someone will write like this. But it is exact good reason to blame the RAM that pushed me to try hotpluging. As thread's title says is there any wrong RAM? That's because 99% of RAM will fit and work at maximum supported frequency as long as DDR type matches.

Old thread but did your N56DP only come with 1 stick of 4GB ram... I always thought it was sold with only 2x4GB of ram.

You got to feel that by the time when I was messing with DDR RAM nobody can be sure if I had been registered here already :)
