I have not experienced any cpu whine from my sager notebook. My HD clicky sound is more sensible than fan noise to me. Could it be straw of luck for everyone?

You need to google it, then find and download it to your computer. ;)

Using VISTA there is an easy and bulletproof solution for CPU whine without any additional tools.
    1) Control Panel
    2) Power Options
    3) Change plan settings (of the plan you are using of course :D
    4) Change advanced power settings
    5) Processor Power Management
    6) Minimum Processor State
On Battery just put: 100 %

When you push 'Apply' the noise is immediately gone...

Have a nice and silent day !

Tried it - Doesn't work for me.

What does work, as a temporary solution, is opening up the sound recorder. I've got it set to load at startup at this point.

Maybe just mobile processors make this noise. Never heard it from mine and that is when fan is off so very silent. Odd

I did for mine. I had to use RMClock. However I tested on other machines, the whine was completely gone; BUT it yielded problems such as freezing, hanging and etc. Hasn't occured to mine for a year. Well thank God I'm just lucky.

That is why I never made a guide about it. It may or may not yield stability problems.

If anyone wants to know I did it, I can post it for all to see or PM me. However I cannot guarantee the stability of your laptop after use. It seems the solution is not for every system.

Wow, I didn't knew this thread exists.

i'm more annoyed by the noise of batteries when they load / when they are fully loaded. this from cellphones, notebooks, etc.

i can sometimes hear that noise while asleep even if it's from another room. i nearly don't notice it, but enough to wake up and think ?. and then the searching begins, where actually is some noise? :)

Whine..? Thats what b*****s do, not notebooks. My notebook, or CPU does not whine! Nor have any of my notebooks that I've owned in the past.

This thread started nearly 2 years ago, I'd imagine notebook manufacturers have adjusted their power supply designs and such to compensate in the meantime.

Well, the laptop I have is a pretty new model, and it definitely whines. IT's not loud, but I have pretty good hearing (I think), and it would drive me nuts if I didn't get rid of it. Luckily, opening up Sound Recorder does that.

Does anyone know how to have a program load at startup such that it is running, but doesn't appear as a window or on the taskbar? An invisible process. It's not such a big deal to move the sound recorder window off to the side of the screen every time I start up vista, but if there was a shortcut to make it happen automatically, I'd love to know it.

^ Well like I said a few posts earlier, it is RMClock (CPU RightMark Clock Utility), but I doubt posting the guide as there may be; and the amount of stability issues involved with other machines - Works for mine as in the high-pitched whine was completely gone, but may not work along side well with other machines.
