There's $600 Ultrabooks with i7 U (and little else...), but anything with an i7 HQ seems to be $800+...

I believe you're comparing 15W TDP cpus with 37W TDP cpus.

Faster CPUs with more cores, cache, and higher frequencies cost more, hudathunkit?

Edit: But the reality is more sobering, isn't it? They are more or less equal in pricing.

    Broadwell-H vs. Broadwell-U

You answered your own question right here:

    Most quad-core notebooks have dGPUs.

The $800 ones are the ones that don't have dGPUs - the ones that do tend to be the $1200+ models.

Besides, do you truly believe that any OEM has ever paid the prices listed on ark.intel.com? That price might be meaningful for retail (desktop) processors, but no HQ or U CPU has ever been available in retail channels due to their very nature.

Peon, are those prices not for 1000 unit lots? How many guaranteed units sold would need to move those prices lower? Anyone other than Acer, Asus, Lenovo, HP, Dell, etc. need not apply, I guess?

$1200 for a notebook with an i7 quad and dGPU? We're talking USD right?

This took me 30 seconds to pull up: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834315062

Your first link is less than $600 right now. You could max out the RAM, put it a 2TB SSD and this would be a force to be reckoned with. At least for raw performance.

    See:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147441&cm_re=2tb_ssd-_-20-147-441-_-Product

Yeah, the screen is a little wimp, but an external 24" IPS panel or larger for around $200 would make any notebook screen envious anyways.

And it would still be under $1.7K with the performance and capabilities for certain workflows of a $2.5K system from just mere months ago.

For a $600 notebook, why not? Especially at 2TB capacity. :)

    But, yeah, I'm still shocked too. :D :D :D

Usually quantity counts as well. For instance a single i7-4720HQ might cost $250 each but a hundred might cost $150 each.
