In term of color richness, the depth of blackness and contrast ratio, is Sony XBRITE HiColor still the best? How does it compare with Dell?

As far as I know, yes.

What Dell computer? Certain ones have been known to have bad screens.

Dell XPS M1530; 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) display with TrueLifeTM (CCFL, 220 nits). Due to my aging eyes, I am not interested in buying the one with higher resolution.

Your Dell screen is crap, imho. Even the better of the two screens they use I don't like. It is widley known to have screen problems. So if you like your Dell screen you will be tap dancing over the Sony. Fujitsu also uses LED, as does Apple in the MBP.. both have great screens as well.

I say no, i think they are great, but with lcd's they're on the same playing ground as everyone else. Their trinitron tv's are another story they are really good.
i think their cd mechanisms blow. but that's my opinion.

Dell use LG, Samsung, Quanta and a few other companies for their screens I think, not sure how they stack up against each other

Like angelicvoices mentions it's really about the backlighting.

IMO no CCFL screen can hold a candela to a well tuned LEDlit one.

I love my Fujitsu screen whihc IMO is one of the best CFlit screens out there, but LED lit are superior for colour range as well as your mentioned focus on black levels and contrast.

One of the main things, is most CFlit screen's whites are kinda yellow, whereas the LEDlit ones truly look crisp white.

However be aware, if not properly calibrated the LEDlit ones can look like crap too as some of the early MacBooks showed.

I'm basing my opinion off of a CCFL Sony SZ420, not a LED screen. The color on it is amazing. There is a lot more to screens than just the backlighting.

True, but really, when you're talking about white and blacks and contrast ratio, LEDlit makes a big difference especially when you're starting with much better white and much more even illumination. I'm thinking of a quality example of a mature quality panel.

Some desktop CFlit screen are very good, especially the expensive HDR models, but for laptops, it's hard to get that same level of quality and consistency. But like I mentioned a bad LEDlit screen can still look like crap, just like the early Macbooks, but nowadays, they are the cream of the crop for notebooks IMO. Hey your mileage may vary.

It's kinda like if you consider LEDlit as Ferraris there's no junker in the bunch, but even it's best may be beaten by a very specialized CFlit 'VW' like the HDR panels aka 'Veyron'.

Anywhoo, to each his own, that's my op-onion.

Sony screens are not that great, I dont really notice much of a difference between them and the competition. The best screens in my opinion are samsung screens. I have samsung lcd's in all of my laptops and I have never had a problem with any of them.

I do not like Sony, as I do not support Japan. I would rather support Korea, since the Koreans have better morals than the Japanese. The japanese are full of themselves, always making it sound as if they are the best, well their not. Different companies always have something which their competitor can not do.

People who have sony screens, why dont you look up the parts on the screens, because guess what Sony does not manufacture their own screens, they are made by Hannstar and Hyundai. So next time you want to go say that sony is the best, why dont you do some research.
Sorry to sound like a jerk, but when you look at a screen, you do not see the lcd, you see the film over the lcd.
Just because a screen is shiny does not mean it is good. Matte, glossy and whatever names the manufacturers quote their screens as, are all of the same screen, the difference lies in the film which covers the lcd.

I don't think the OP is looking for the more culturally/morally adjusted LCD, just the one that looks best.

I like Samsung's Desktop and TV lines, but that has little to do with their culture/morals so much as their colour, black levels and B-W-B speed.

What does that have to do with the OP's statement?
If the panels were made by FisherPrice in Mexico, if at the end of the day they look better than the others and have the same reliability, who cares who touched it en-route?
    These aren't blood diamonds.

Actually I tend to see the result of all the factors, ie Backlight -> LCD -> Glass+Film.

Anywhooo, I'm going home to watch my Phillips HDTV, Phillips is the best because the Dutch are morally superior to the South Koreans and the Japanese. :p

TheGreatG****Ape, you are mostly right concerning the majority of laptop LCD screens.

But if you have ever seen a high end PC monitor, such as my BenQ FP241W, you would freak. You don't need LED's to get proper black, white, and color, but they do help.
