My laptop is an acer 3050 with the S1 socket 3500+. I've seen posts here with people upgrading to a TL-52 dual core but nothing higher so I was wondering if anyone had tried upgrading to a TL-66 or higher cpu. I called Acer tech support to find out, but no one there knew anything.

    Welcome to nbr,

If you have seen someone use a TL based processor in the acer 3050 than any TL processor will work. I know that some acer's had a limit where they could only be upgraded to a ML series processor.
If you have seen someone report as using a TL-52 in their Acer 3050, than a TL60, TL-62, TL-64, TL-66 and TL-68 will also work.
You cannot upgrade to a turion ultra processor. The TL-68 is the highest you can go.

Before upgrading the processor you should make sure that your Acer has the latest bios update. That will give you the best chance of the cpu being recognized.

All TL-6X processors are in the 35 watt power range, so expect it to run a bit hotter than your sempron.
After the upgrade you should check out The Undervolting Guide. You can use software like cpu rightmark to increase the efficiency of your processor, by lowering the voltage going to it. This results in less heat generation, and 0 loss in system performance.

Thanks for your quick reply. The general consensus I've seen on the net is that it should work, but I just wanted to make sure. Found TL-64 going for around $110 on eBay which I think would be worth it for going from a 1.8ghz single core performance to 2.2ghz dual core.

    Turion TL-50 $15:

It seems like a good buy, 1.6Ghz dual for $15. Sure a TL-64 would be better, but its going to be more expensive.

You should post a wanted ad in the for sale section of Hardforum. I am sure you can get that TL-6x processor for much less than ebay

If it could only take ML cpu's then it would be socket 754. I think you mean MK which is single core variant for socket S1

Thanks for that Tippey, MK is what I should have said.

    Was your bios flash successful?
Try flashing it again and see if that fixes the cd problem.
If it does not go into the bios and select the option to set it back to factory defaults

Yes BIOS was flashed without a problem. Reading through Ubuntu forums, this is a known issue for Acer 3050/5050 models. There is either a bug in the latest Linux kernel or Acer has a buggy table or something. Anyway apparently the only way to make Linux work on my laptop atm is to downgrade to an earlier BIOS which doesn't appeal to me. I think I will just be stuck with windows for now 'til the problem is resolved on the Linux side.

Hi, if u want to install any Linux on aspire 3050, u should downgrade the BIOS to ver 3302, u can find it from the site of Acer. I did that, and it works with ubuntu 7.04-8.10, mandariva, fedora, etc. good luck.
Now, I just want to upgrade the cpu and I hope it works with Mac os x.
