    Hi all experts here.

I just bought Seagate 160GB 7200.2 OEM <st9160823as> the drive came with no box and it had a jumper which I don't know what's the meaning in each side of jumper.

If you hold a harddrive and look straight to the back of the harddrive, the default jumper cap is in the right side.

But I would like to know what's the meaning in right, left and remove the jumper cap.

I guess this drive come with the default sata 150 which is set in the right side and my laptop is dell xps m1210.

I tried to bench 3 type of jumper setting by HD Tune but the score isn't the same especially, completely difference in the minimum transfer rate. So, I don't have any idea.

    here is my benching result.

    default jumper

    min 28.8

    max 61.8

    average 44.8

    access time 14.3

    burst rate 95.6

    cpu usage 100%

when I remove cap, the score is almost the same as default but minimum transfer rate is completely difference by only 7.7!

So, I don't know what's better in minimum transfer rate score between 7.7 and 28.8 and which side of jumper should I set.

The jumper settings should be on a sticker on the side of the hard drive itself. You may need to remove the HDD casing however. From what I know, the jumper settings should be on Master, not Slave, or anything else.

For SATA drives, there are no Master/Slave/Cable Select jumper settings.

The jumper is to control SATA150 or SATA300 mode. With it removed it's in SATA2 (SATA300) mode which activates NCQ. With it on it's on SATA mode and disables NCQ.

So, I'd say don't put that jumper at all. There is no need to slow your drive down as your notebook has SATA 300 support.

    Thks for all comments

I just tested it again with the default jumper cap<limit sata150>, the result is very weired bcoz my laptop always get random freezing in some programs, even notepad, IE or microsoft basic calculator with the dr.mortem debugger box appears. My laptop is completely not responsive and the only way I can do is force the system shutdown by press the power button for a while.

funny thing is I remove the cap and all the problems are gone. yes!

One more thing, I thought Dell xps m1210 has sata 150 controller not 300. I just knew from the above comment that this model has sata 300 controller.

    Thks again.
