I've never seen one, although I'd like to. Anyone know if such a thing exists? That's one of my requirements of a notebook, is to have dual internal HDD's, and I can only find 17" models that have this. I don't care about screen size, so smaller is better.

I don't believe that there is either. But, there are nice 7200 RPM 200 GB HDDs out now on the market. So unless you are looking for massive storage those HDs might be a good option.

from the specs on the D531, Dell says that the modular bay can have an 80gb hard drive put into it. This would require you to not use an optical drive while it is in though. I don't really know any details on how this works, but that would be dual hard drives.

If it can't take two of 'em (internally), it's not an option for me. Rotational speed is not the issue.

I believe Gigabyte or MSI makes one also. Isnt that what a 3 spindle is?
I was in the market for something similar before I settled for my Lenovo and an USB drive.

For anybody else wondering, for some applications like audio recording/music, Video editing etc you require two hard drives. Size is less important than having your data coming off of a drive independent of the application/OS drive.

yeah, but not this model. The extra hd bay does not have the SATA & power connector.

Otherwise u could go for an Thinkpad T60 or Travelmate 8215. Their solution is that u can switch out the optical drive with an hd bay. And its possible to make the switch while ur laptop is on. I can tell this because i have the T60 myself and it works great. Dont know about the Acer though...

Just be cautious what u choose. I got T60 from my work and its great. IBM had that hd bay for along time so u have alot of options for accessories, like extra batterie etc. from anywhere. IBM options are good. U can buy an empty bay and put which ever hd u prefer. My came with 120 GB HD and they put an extra 160 GB hd in the bay. Really nice ;) We have alot of Virtual PC's running, so needed all that space...

For the travelmate i can tell u that u dont have the same options as with IBM. U can only buy the bay with an pre-installed hd of 80GB or 100GB. Atleast thats what they do her in Denmark. I said that i wanted a bigger hd of 160GB or the new 200GB, but thats not made and properbaly wont be this year. Acer do not have such a big demand for these extra hds, thats why... and u cant just buy the 80GB and switch out with a bigger drive because its supposed to be sealed in a special way....? i dont now how but thats what they told me, so i just forgot about it. I can tell u that Acers solutions is very expensive. The 100GB version was for approximately 350$ So i forgot about that. Although it could be cheaper somewhere else...

Either search for laptops with removable/interchangeable optical drive, like IBM(Lenovo) T60 or buy an USB HD. U will get much more for the bucks.
Well thats my advice anyway. Hope it helped...

Not if I have any hope at all for decent performance. ;) USB hard drives are slooooooow. It has to be internal disk or FireWire (or eSATA I suppose).

But thanks everyone for the responses. :)
