    Hey guys,

I'm a bit confused. Everyone I know is saying that a laptop that holds DDR2 memory cannot support DDR3 memory. But when I went on hwinfo to check the specs, I get this:

Any help? Would it make sense to upgrade to DDR2 400mHz or DDR3 533 mHz?

If I recall correctly, DDR3 has a different pin count than DDR2, so not even physically interchangeable.

If you notebook uses DDR2 memory , you cannot use DDR3

All right, all right....but how do you explain the image posted above? Is hwinfo actually wrong?

I cannot really see your image it`s a bit small, but don't believe all you see read in these system information programs, they do get it wrong sometimes.

All right then. No DDR3. Anyone else want to weigh in?

Before I close the lid on the DDR3 possibility, can you guys take another look at the RAM I currently have in my system?

It's showing that I have a clock of 199mHz. So would it make sense to upgrade to 400mHz DDR2?

You have DDR2 800MHz memory, that is 400MHz x2, because DDR2 is double data rate , see review below.

HWINFO32 is only reporting what the chipset of the motherboard can support, it can support DDR2 or DDR3 , but you only have memory slots that can take DDR2.

Exactly - the data reported represent chipset (MCH) capabilities only.
You might want to check the SMBIOS DMI information in HWiNFO32, but this is not guaranteed to be correct (it relies on BIOS info which is quite often not filled properly by BIOS engineers).
In either case, DDR3 would require a different slot than DDR2.
