    That's the first I've seen.

    It's mentioned
on the Seagate website but there's no mention yet of a 640MB Momentus. The data sheet was created on 10 June, so it's quite new.

Someone will have to buy an external drive (when it reaches the shelves) to see if is a stand HDD inside or has a board with a USB connector, as WD is now doing for its external HDDs.

I bet that the drive inside is 5400 RPM and not 7200 RPM. So, the current internal Seagate 500GB, 7200 RPM drive is probably faster.

The Seagate 500GB 7200RPM drive in theory is better, but in real life, falls short of the mark.

Gosh, I just got my 500GB...
But, why don't they make 750Gb instead?

I think the only found a way to get 320GB on one platter.

It's possible to make a three platter drive but it has penalties for power consumption and seek times.

    oh I see now.
But that's still impressive, we just had 250Gb on one platter a few months back.

I agree and they're beating WD and others again by being the first to market.

About time. Ive been holding out on a 500GB drive because I knew that knowing my luck a bigger/better drive would be released right after :D

Im hoping soon we will see either a 500GB Scorpion Black (7200rpm), or else this 640GB drive on the market.

Just keep waiting, then you see a 1TB drive after, then 1.5TB... you can wait forever and there will always be a bigger/better drive released right after.

No, newer/larger mobile hard-drives tend to have a long time between major releases. The first 9.5mm high 500GB drives hit the market around 1 year ago (samsung) or 9 months ago (WD).

So right around now is when you can expect bigger drives, so there is nothing wrong with waiting a little while if you want, it is called an educated decision.

K-TRON, I believe has info on a 750GB drive coming out soon, so yes, right after this 640GB there will be a bigger and better drive released right after.

I don't know if they have found a way to put 375GB on one platter yet (2.5'' drive).

According to K-TRON, they have, but I cannot confirm. Hopefully he can pipe up on any updates with the 750GB 5400/7200RPM drives.

Seeing as SSD's price will fall, when they become affordable at a storage level, that's bigger than average ppls' need, (maybe by the time we see 1.5TB laptop HDD), tradition HDD will be regarded as inferior goods.

Until people return to hard drives due to SSDs awful cell life. Im sticking with hard drives. At least the magnetic locations on hard drives have infinite life compared the awful life of SSD cells. Sure mechanical drives will eventually fail but at least the magnetic disks which hold you data have infinite magnetic life.

SSD´s are durable, they will last more than your laptop usage.

Ok mommy Ill not post again here nor answer your posts  . Btw if you need more useful info about SSD there are MANY threads about them I even had an SSD, I even made a review about it Why did you even bother posting that before searching?, I read many of them and in short words that was an acceptable answer, Im sorry that you didnt like it.

    More on topic:

Guys what about release dates? I really want to see the specs of these drives :) .

Maybe you should read up on SSDs. Solid state technology is superior to HDDs in every aspect (except price), hence why military and governments have been using SSDs for mission critical data as opposed to HDDs for the past several decades. Comparable solid state examples would be LED (solid state) vs. CCFL backlights.

Wait until the day IBM rolls out their millipede memory, will a day that gives mechanical drives a new meaning and solid state drives a run for its money

I dont know... it looks like millipede has pretty much been surpassed by both hard drives and SSD's in terms of data density. Every time it surpasses either the next round make millipede still an ineffective storage media. It doesnt have the speed of SSD's or the capacity of HD's, i think it will probably never make it to commercial use.

I was hoping PMC technology would replace HD's due to its capability to make 1TB flashdrives, but as of this year it still not in commercial production :(

Seagate's 640GB is probably optimized for low power, not for performance (like previous Seagate 5400rpm drives).

I don't expect it to beat WD5000BEVT in real world performance.

Wrong, Seagates 640gb is ABSOLUTELY optimized for BOTH performance and low power and with higher density platters it WILL beat the WD5000BEVT

Do you have any source to back that up?

I/O usually sucks with Seagate, I'm not expecting higher density to make up for that.

5400.4, 5400.5, 5400.6 have all been poor performers.

Haha, that one is great.. :) I really like the infinite magnetic life of all the HDDs that died so far. back to SSD for me. can't wait for the day i can get them for all my TBs for my home-server.

still, i like those. i prefer 2.5" drives to 3.5" drives. so big 2.5" drives are cool.

750gb soon? hmm.. happily i don't need any right now, so i can watch in a wait'n'see mode.

Apparently Toshiba has word of releasing a 750gb 5400rpm drive. I'm not sure if its real. I remember reading it on the internet a few days back
