As many of you may have heard, the upcoming Windows 7 will have an " XP mode" that allows users to run a virtualized version of Windows XP.
However, the XP mode will have special requirements - it can only work on computers that have processors supporting virtualization.
Poll question: Does your computer's processor support virtualization?
TO FIND OUT:
1. Go to this link and download the SecurAble program (115 kb).
2. Run it by double-clicking it.
3. If it says "Yes" for Hardware Virtualization, then you have it and vice versa.

T8300, has virtualisation, but is "locked" on, probably the 8510p's bios.
Won't be too much effort to re-enable it
-
I don't buy any low end CPUs, plus a co-worker and I were looking at some charts this morning, so this was an easy question to answer
-
My T9500 has it, and my BIOS has the option, although I have it disabled for now. What are the pros/cons?
-
T6400 and T6600 don't have intel VT apparently... Oh well, I'll just dual/triple boot if I really need to.
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
P8400 > Yes
Pentium M 740 > No
Doubt I'll be install 7 on the 740, though -

What is the main advantage of virtualization?

I read on the Sony Forum enableVT that this program does not work 100% of the time.
CrystalCPUID is an alternative.

Yep my CPU supports it easily enough. But the 6860's BIOS unfortuantly dont in its stock form, and its really not worth the effort to flash the upgraded BIOS just for VT.
I'll more than likley be selling off the lappy and getting a new one about the time of win7 / capella so i'll probably care more about it there so i can play me some warcraft 2 again -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Atom N270 and Pentium 4 both don't have it, but I have no need for the XP in Win 7 anyway.

At work my vostro 1500 (T7300) has virtualization although it is currently turned off in the bios.
The PowerEdge 2900 server(Xeon E5320) I manage at work also has it, currently it is running Citrix Xenserver which allows me to virtualize my file server, exchange server and print server all on one machine. I look forward to testing windows 7 on here in the future.
My dv5z (ZM-82) has it as well but like the vostro it is currently disabled in the bios. -

So how reliable will the XP be? Also if Win 7 fails then it will take XP with it too? Isnt it?
-
-
The SL9400 in my ThinkPad x200T supports VT just like most other high end Intel CPUs.

If you don't have virtualization support, you can install your own virtual machine and use the "unity" mode. It's the same thing as the XP virtualization(for the most part), except it's not free.

Actually I like Windows Vista rather than XP. Now its time to try out the Windows 7 RC. Hope it will change my mind from Vista to 7.

I wish we had Win98 mode... I wanna play Soul Reaver again.

Let me just clarify for other's that when you say 'your computer' does this mean the computer which we use when we go to work (assuming you have an office job) which is then not 'my' computer but the companies. Which I'm sure alot of user's do. Or does it mean your computer like the one still running Win95 on it lol
Anyways I have a relatively old Toshiba Satellite model which has been running no prob for me for about 5-6 years sorta like the guy who's still using his pentium M laptop.. and so I doubt it will run on my rig but I ain't concerned, I'm upgrading to the Gateway P-7811FX, ya'll know the specs! Even though I do agree that Window's 7 will probably be pretty awesome can't wait to see what's in store. Oh yeah and to all you ingnorant hater's it'll probably be even more stable the Vista! (I know some dude said this but it's worth repeating) -

mines say Locked On?

Intel screwed those of us with the P7350, they originally said it had VT and later withdrew the spec.
-
if my memory serves me right...
Intel chips that support VT:
all mobile quads
all T9x00
all T8x00
all T7x00
all P8x00/9x00 CPU's (not 100%).
T2x00 except the T2300E
not sure about early chips... so someone else can fill this in.
AMD:
All Turion MK Single Cores
All AMD Turion X2 Dual cores
All AMD Turion Ultra Dual cores
Some older AMD athlon X2's not the QL
I don't know about semprons or earlier chips.
so anyone who knows more than me add it! lets make a master list! -
Yup, I believe all P8xxx and P9xxx released in Intel's last platform have VT. My P8700 does.
-
What about P9500? Im curious
.
-
my t7500 have it
-
T8300 proudly supports Hardware Virtualizaton.
-
My Vaio says:
64Bit maximum length
Yes - Hardware D.E.P. (whatever that is)
Locked Off - Hardware Virtualization
(and yes, Sony disabled this in the Bios) -
Also the single core Turion (MK series) support AMD-V but no other single core Turion coming before them has it (i.e Lancaster core).
However the mobile Semprons are a bit of a "gray area" for me as I am not quite sure about them. -
ok, great I've made a couple of corrections!
-
on mine it's Locked On =)

Didn't read all of itz - but it gives me a good idea what the idea is.
Just the article in for XP and older and I have Vista Business
By the way - what should I vote in the poll? My Bios prevents hardware virtualisation but it can be enabled - ...with some workarounds (see Sony subforum) -
Your CPU supports it, so I'd say vote yes
Also that's an XP article, but DEP is applicable to Vista as well (pretty sure of that...). -
-
How the heck does an Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.20GHz in a Dell Optiplex 755 not have Hardware Virtualization? This is my work computer...and I always thought it was the shiznit! That sucks...
Anyhow..after Windows 7 I wouldn't be needing the old faithful XP anymore. -
64Bit Length
Hardware DEP off
Hardware Virtualization Locked ON -
Yes, but I have disabled it becouse I don't know what it actually does
-
What about the P8600? Any comments?
-
Hmm gives me a "Locked on"
Asus P5B Deluxe -
virtualbox runs faster for me when i disable processor level virtualization (vt-x), and yes my processor does support it (core 2 duo t9300).
-
-
X7800 has got it, P7350 doesnt though..
-
Yes on my desktop q6700
-
Yep, with Virtualization "Locked On"
-
my U7600 says VT is locked off!
its a sony tz27GN...is there anyway to turn it on? -
My L7500 has VT and enabled through BIOS.
My Aspire 5570 and 5580 have processors that have VT (T7400 and T7200 respectively) but not enabled due to bios and Acer will not release one with VT support.
