Hey, my 3 day old Asus has been making this noticeable sound since I bought it, it's like this strange very low high pitch sound, it doesn't sound like any click of death I've ever heard and I'm not sure if it could be an internal fan or something.

Are notebooks supposed to work in near silence?

Also it seems when my momentum seagate HDD is not working heavy loads it clicks quite a bit but not loudly.

I know this thread is a little stupid, but I'm not used to laptops making much noise, I know they're all diffrent.

Depending your your age/sensitivity and/or surroundings all systems make some noise or another.

With systems going thinner/lighter more and more, and manufacturers cutting costs as much as possible, noise 'leaks' much more easily from today's systems than yesteryear's 'bricks'.

As for the HD noise - I am only bothered by it when it is indicating a failing drive.

The use of PerfectDisk Professional 11 with a couple of online/offline runs once a month calms down most HD's that were accused of being 'noisy' before. Not that the volume of the clicks were decreased: just that their frequency was greatly reduced to the occasional, instead of the constant 'chattering' state. In addition, the system with PD is also more responsive too. :)

id say its your fan, It sounds like it wold be your HDD but if you say it wasnt working that hard then it shouldnt be making much noise if its not doing much work.

What I hear is like.. a whirring sound.. I THINK it's the hard disc spinning around, could I be right?

Also surely the head would make some quiet clicking sounds considering it reads and writes the disc mechanically?

That's confusing, but it sounds like you're describing a high-frequency whining noise. Based on that description, I'd say that you're listening to CPU whine. There are a number of ways to prevent it, but none of them are reliable; do a search of this forum section and you'll find tons of threads on it.

I just saw a video on youtube and you can clearly hear behind the guys voice the same noise I'm hearing, otherwise you may be right Bog:

    YouTube - Review Asus K52 K52Jr-A1

Also I failed to mention does "CPU Whine" affect the life span of a laptop?

Yes, depending on how rugged/durable the construction is when you finally throw it across the room in desperation to stop that noise! :D

it's stopped o_O ... after I ran that disc programme

edit: still there... but its quiet.. have to put ear near fan to really hear it.
is this a real problem for me if it doesn't bother me?
will my CPU fry like a piece of bacon floating towards the sun?

when you say "sometimes" do you mean like every few hours? every few seconds?

mine makes a very gentle sound, like the head is just going back and fourth at its own pace, its not like head crash or anything like that.. whats goin' onnnn

If your actual temps are within reason, the noise is just a nuisance.

Many electronics over the years have given their special noise 'signature' in quiet surroundings.

Which program did you run to quiet it down?

My Sony Vaio EC makes a very high pitched noise sometimes. Restarting usually helps, I'm fairly certain it's the fan.

Ghost, my scorpio black clicks a few times every few hours. for like...I dunno. It's not often and I don't even remember if it's a single click or click, few minutes/seconds later another click or what.

also if you put your ear on the palm rest where the hdd is you can hear it, but I mean...it's not loud enough for me to hear over ambient noises (laptop fan, AC blowing down, etc)

Wouldn't "annoying" be subjective as to one person annoying maybe pleasure to another..
