I have several desktop (3.5") drives in identical enclosures... they all work fine except one. I just bought another enclosure for a drive, and I installed it exactly as I did before. The first time, I plugged it in and XP recognized that there was something there ("found new hardware")but wasn't doing anything. the drivers weren't installing, and my HD diagnostic tool could not recognize the drive. It didn't seem to be spinning properly, and was making a slight "click, click" every 10-15 seconds or so. I turned it off and opened the enclosure, checked the connections, and re-assembled it. This time it spun up fine, sounded nice and healthy (no clicking or any strange sounds), but Windows would not recognize it at all. There was no indication that a drive existed. I can't access it at all.
I'm thinking the enclosure or the drive may be damaged... however, both seem to be operating @ 100%. Is there something I'm missing here? I'm using these drives with my Laptop. If anyone has a suggestion for this please let me know.
Thanks.

I would take the drive out and put it in one of the known working enclosures to see where the failure lies...........

Now that sounds like non sufficiant power , Your hdd needs more power than the enclosure is giving... Ill bet thats the problem

Aren't 3.5 externals generally run by AC power?
