i think Western Digital does not make drivers/updates for their hard drives. i checked the WD website once, and if im not mistaken they rely on the BIOS thingies...i know its awfully vague, but basically im saying there will never be drivers for any WD drives

There is no such thing as a "driver" for hard drives. Are you referring to HDD firmware maybe? If so, you might see if Western Digital has firmware updates for your hard drive on their site, but in all honesty I doubt it. Simply put, hard drives are one of the few computer hardware devices that do not require driver updates, or really, firmware updates for that matter.

In any event, you should be able to just pop the hard drive in, go to your BIOS, ensure that it's recognized as a SATA device and you're good to go.

Are you referring to the "Hit F6 to load SCSI or RAID drivers" message during a Windows XP installation?

You need to go to your laptop BIOS and go to Hard disk section, there should be something like AHCI, and Compatibility Mode.
If you are installing XP you need the SATA driver, which is not specifically to the HDD, to bypass this choose Compatibility mode in the BIOS and install Windows, then download the appropiate driver from the manufacturers's (AHCI Matrix Intel Storage driver) and reenable AHCI on the BIOS.
