I though they already have the Dual Core Atom.

Wasn't the atom 330 really disappointing?

This is a dual core based on the next generation of Atom processors called Pineview. It will have a lower TDP than the 330, and will be specifically made for netbooks. The 330 sucks because all it is is two single core Atoms slapped together. This will not be.

    BTW Atoms are not crap.

    really?
i'd call anything that cant match a celeron-m clock for clock crap

    i mean look at this:
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...celeron-m-processors-before-official-release/
the atom barely beats a pentium 3-m at 60% of its clock speed. sure its a good budget processor for power usage... but when it comes to performance i wouldnt touch it
i'd really recommend looking at a c2d ulv cpu... they're not bad u know :)

Dual-core would just cut into the battery life - a huge plus of getting a netbook in the first place.

Also, I don't see the point of going dual core. It's like adding an ACOG scope to a Glock - you just shouldn't do it. The ACOG makes the Glock a poorer pistol (by adding weight and size, just like going dual core would detract from a netbook's battery life), for what? The ability to snipe a coke can at 50 m?

I remember Intel saying, after that news items appeared, it won't make Dual Core Atom available for netbooks. Not sure if that's still their strategy though.

Find me a C2D ULV in a netbook-form-factor please for around $500 CAN new :)
And the Atom was never made to be a performance processor. I think that is pretty clear?

goofball i dont think you understand what I was trying to say .... if someone tries to say the atom is a good processor... I have a duty to inform them how wrong they are... the atom barely matches a pentium 3 clock-for-clock... when did i say the atom was made to be a performance processor?? It does have its uses in the budget market... but other than that.. i'd recommend saving up for a laptop with a ulv if you have the money, and need the battery life... but if you dont have the money and you buy it... will you really be happy with its sub par performance??? I mean the power usage is phenomally low... but its performance is many generations backwards... and to me substituting one for the other is not the best solution :)

forget your duty. the atom is great in the right place. if you still live in the "clock-for-clock" world then you may have missed .. uhm .. this whole millenium (it's only 8 years old but still).

i have both an ulv c2d and an atom 330. they're a different league, and still both worth their money and fullfilling their tasks greatly.

my winhomeserver boots up in half a minute or so, and runs great. it's an atom 330 which happily saves me a huge amount of power, while it's good enough for beying home server, being webserver, being clickonceapp host, torrent downloads, datamanagement, and sql server.

so it can do a lot. just get one for really cheap and start playing with it and you'll realize how wrong you are. espencially with xp a great duo.

i can't myself wait for the ion platform from nvidia, though. that'll be the perfect media center system (completely hidden in the tv if done well :))

oh, and i've had in place of the atom 330 a pentium 4 in use before. the atom 330 is actually more snappy.

and it beats the celeron based asus eee by a large margin, too.

http://cgi.ebay.ch/Intel-Atom-330-D945GCLF2-Mini-ITX-1GB-M300-PicoPSU-90_W0QQitemZ130273421317QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item130273421317&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A2|39%3A1|240%3A1318 that's what i have. find me a new system that small and completely quiet (if you turn of the fans :)) for a similar price that beats any old p4 standing around while not consuming even a 10th of the power of the p4 system.
