Hello everyone, without a studio or a house till next month, I haven't made content on BOAT for over 2 months. Earlier this year I was talking about memory upgrades with a few other creators and decided to test this out for myself.
I have the Eluktronics RP-17 4800H 2060 here with its factory 8gb x 2 memory. I have tested several 4800H laptops and noticed how it wasn't pushing its paired GPU to its fullest. Here's a playlist featuring this laptop for reference. Note the Poor GPU utilization..

After researching Memory I decided to settle on these Samsung Sticks...two to be exact.

Performance gains were outstanding!
Cinebench R20 went from 4450 to 4630
Firestrike Physics went from 19,475 to 22,103
Time Spy Physics went from 8,063 to 9,650
GPU utilization held pretty well at or near 99% for Warzone and BFV which is NOT easy and rarely was the case with the stock memory.

RAM is as important as the CPU. CPU+RAM=Work done (always).
Curious if you'll see any gains going to 64GB RAM? -

Shouldn't and couldn't isn't actual.
Testing (real-world) is. -

Maybe you would care to show some of your real-world testing then.

32GB of dual rank increases Physics and Combined scores on 3DMark 11, which pushed the CPU and GPU harder than more modern benchmarks do. Not sure why it does since it doesn't use anywhere near 32GB of RAM, but test results proved it to be true.

My real-world testing in my real-world workflows shows improvements with each increase in RAM capacity.
Search for the ones I've shared previously, I'm not here to spoon-feed you, as they say.Vasudev, Dr. AMK, Papusan and 1 other person like this. -
Yep, one of many reasons soldered components as etc welded on memory chips in notebooks should be banned. You are pretty screwed if the OEM soldered on trash memory chips.

What is the behavior like on battery? Lately have seen some articles about AMD systems artificially cutting back performance to extend battery life. This in itself is not surprising but it seems they cut everything back, NVME drives included.Vasudev, Papusan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -
Just a theory, but it may have something to do with the percentage of available (free) memory resources. Anecdotally, Windows seems to behave better when there is an abundance of free CPU and memory resources, even when it isn't using most of what is available.Vasudev, Papusan, tilleroftheearth and 1 other person like this.

@Mr. Fox, I think it's more than a theory.
I haven't seen a regression when maxing out the resources of any platform, but the improvements, however incremental they may seem to someone else, are there. -
tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
I'm not going to do that either. Besides, I don't care to show my results (again).
What I asked was if the improvements I see are also seen in the OP's workflow too. I know more RAM improves mine. -
What a profound waste of time :/

I prefer 32gb for editing. I get less stuttering and a snappier experience with 32 versus 16.saturnotaku, Mr. Fox, Papusan and 1 other person like this.

32GB is preferred over 16GB, of course.
What I'm asking is if 64GB (or more) is superior for your workflows over the 32GB you're using now. If/when (ever) you have the chance to try it.Mr. Fox likes this. -

As is your input.

I called it a "theory" because I have only my own results to draw from and don't care to "prove" what works for me. I do think something in Windows' makeup identifies the available CPU and memory resources and adjusts the OS behavior accordingly, but I have no evidence to support that. All I know is I get better benchmark results (on certain titles) with 32GB than I do with 16GB, and going dual rank moves the needle a little more. My experience is good enough for me. I don't need a technical or scientific explanation if I see the results I want.
How is a valuable member of our community sharing his experience a waste of time? Unless all participation in social media is a waste of time, in which case I might agree with you. I keep coming back for the people I enjoy having the engagement with... no other reason.Papusan and tilleroftheearth like this. -

Much better than putting out a few simple keywords for me to try and find this mount of evidence that supposedly exists. -
Yeah, I see that... rather puzzling. Not sure what the deal is.

Too much ego, not enough humility. Of course I cant say for certain, as I am not qualified for such determinations. Just a lay person on the net.
While I didnt care for how that all came down, was actually interested in the material if it well, materialized.
Turns out its not going to, hence, a profound waste of time.

RAM 16 GB? 32 GB or more?
If anyone is into RAM caching (to speed up read/write performance) or running applications from a RAM drive, that's a great reason to move up to 64GB as well.Papusan, Vasudev and tilleroftheearth like this. -
Damn that's the price of Samsung DDR3L SODIMM in India. That single module Samsung will be triple the price. Sometimes I envy US prices and availability.
I wonder if 5000H Ryzen exhibit similar free boost after replacing stock memories.
I believe it to be battery cells degrading quicker due to how CPU/GPU perf. have increased and are unable to sustain the optimal power. I don't think current notebooks/laptop can sustain 65W+ CPU load along with 60-100W RTX/AMD GPUs on combined mode. Nowadays the battery gets very hot quickly and shuts off once reaching 65C-70C. Dunno if it has to do with non-removable battery glued to chassis or removable battery design has better longevity.Mr. Fox likes this. -
Exactly the same there as well. Also for laptops with Intel chips. Just look at Dell Alienware’s scam ram.
No other options in India? No options to buy on web stores outside?Vasudev likes this. -
Because a lot of manufacturers especially in 2021 laptops are installing the cheapest ram as possible to cut costs without anyone noticing it.

You'd be surprised how many times I've low-key helped out manufacturers of laptops or specific companies that supply the components with private videos to assist in the making of better products or the improvement of future ones.
In the end, we as enthusiasts often know more about performance than some of those responsible for creating these performance devices. What looks evil to some looks like lack of knowledge to me. If I were involved with a specific company, I would make it my priority to get pre-production samples and test. Then see what can be bought while offering the best product we could while still profitable. -

Not only do people expect to be spoon-fed, but they also want it digested too.
Now maybe it's better understood my stance on, 'search yourself', for information I've provided countless times over and over. -
So does it mean, that the 4800H isn't that bad of a CPU for gaming after all? Earlier, I used to think that manufacturers didn't pair the 4800H with higher tier GPUs because of the inability of this processor to cope with the demands of anything above 2060, due to the CPU bottleneck. But now it seems that the RAM was the main culprit behind all this. So presumably it can also handle a bit more, like the 2070 as well?

4000 series AMD mobile wasn't on level with 5000 series. Many reasons OEMs never opted for AMD chips. Also the lack of enough chips helped on that decisions.Lakshya and tilleroftheearth like this.

Far from the truth. The 4800H can easily be paired with GPUs above an RTX 2060 but a lot of OEMs went with Intel with their premium laptops even though the 4800H beats Intel 9th gen chips even the i7-10750H. There are many reasons for it, people said OEMs was biased towards AMD CPUs, or had a contract with Intel or something or even the lack of thunderbolt but i was think it was because of a shortage issue during COVID, it was hard get a 4000 series laptop with a GPU above a GTX 1650Ti and i had wait to until September 2020 to get my current laptop because i wanted at least a 1660ti and didnt want to go with ASUS TUF.
The 4000 series was the reason why OEMs started pairing the 5000 series chips with High end Nvidia GPUs because of how powerful they were. It even stopped Intel from being lazy and complacent for years. -
saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
It was because of the 4000 series lack of cache compared to Intel as to why OEMs didn't pair those Ryzen chips with higher end GPUs. There wouldn't have been much of a point.KING19 likes this. -
I see but i dont think a lack of cache has anything to do with it, even searching around there no mention of that. I still think it was due to shortages due to COVID so OEMs didnt wanna take that risk plus i heard there wasnt much of a demand for AMD CPUs with high end NVIDIA GPUs at the time. Like i said it was hard to get a 4000 series laptop above a GTX 1650Ti, only the ASUS TUF has and Eluktronics as well even though most people never heard of the brand. By the time the 1660ti and RTX 2060 AMD laptops showed up in the fall with the HP OMEN and Lenovo Legion it was too late.
