Since my 1720 is stuck in production, I have time to think (bad!). I have the 160gb drive and I am now considering canceling and going the 120gb dual route. Besides slightly more weight - any advantages or disadvantages I should consider?

less battery life. you should be able to add in the drive later on of your own personal choice.

Why would you go from a 160Gb drive to a 120Gb drive?
They are both going to weigh the same and use the same amount of power.
That is if they are both the same RPM.

I have a somewhat related question.

my current laptop is an old gateway with a 100gb 5400 hard drive and runs windows xp.

I have a Dell Inspirion 1700 on the way with 7200 rpm hard drive and vista installed.

Is there an easy way where I could use the 5400 hard drive on my gateway as a second hard drive?

I would actually prefer to just use it for spare capacity and to access my files, not the programs or operating system that used to be on the gateway (don't wanna have to deal with dual boot or anything).

Are there any other pros and cons of this that I am overlooking?

(power consumption not a huge issue, as will be plugged in most of the time)

    Thanks in advance,

    Evan

When I said "120 DUAL route" - I meant 2 - 120gb drives. Doesn't matter now, it shipped today. As flipfire said, I can just add one later of my own choice.

Evan - I know the 1720 has 2 drive bays and you can add another drive with the proper caddy (I'll let others here talk about that actual drive you want to use). Here's the THREAD that talks about what you will need.
