As to your question yes you can upgrade to Core 2(merom) when it is relesed provided the BIOS of the laptop you are going to buy either supports it natively or if the manufacturer provides an update to the BIOS to support Merom. -
It's not worth it getting a cpu. U should juz w8 4 a laptop 2 have core duo when it comes out.

COOL. Thx for the info! and yes, i will search first next time...

No no..disregard what Juz Follow ATI said. Go ahead and get a Core Duo laptop now. When Merom comes out..you'll be able to upgrade to Merom. All current core duo laptops will support Merom. I bought my W3J knowing this and I am enjoying this beast everyday. Buy the notebook NOW so you can enjoy it, and then when Merom comes out, just upgrade. This way you can get the best of both worlds. Good luck.

Wait till 64bit applications come out or wait some time till the next upgrade. Current stats show Merom with a 20% performance boost than Yonah, but speeds arent that big either(some one in the Asus section got a test version of Merom and put it into a S96j, and it performed exactly).

the core duo 2s are supposed to be released on July 27th...

sorry to hijack the thread, but according to what I just saw, the dell 1705 with a T2400 I ordered this morning can be upgraded to the core duo 2 later, even without a bios update? will the duo 2 be putting out more heat than what i have now? same, less?
-
Nobody can tell you 100% that you will be able to upgrade it, but in the experiments that have been done and the releases from Intel, there seems to be nothing pointing at not being able to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo with current Core Duo computers. If you can upgrade, the power consumption and heat output should not be any different.

Like said by mZimm nothing sure yet, but as far as socket, it fits. I believe the general assumption is that most would just require a bios update. The real question I suppose is will our companies release updates.
Duo upgrade?
