I have an high end built which was rigged up by my brother . Its just over 2 years old. I use dust filters to prevent dust from entering the PC but last week my screen froze . I took the help of a friend to open up the rig but there was lot of dust build up which would have probably led to over heating .

I've looked online for specialized vacuum cleaners designed for cleaning out computers and electronic equipment but given the limited amount of use I'd get from such a purchase I felt it was a rip off (considering they start at $500+ and can easily break the $1000 price barrier). Instead I'm thinking of using these air purifiers Clair TD1866 ( Go-Clair | Premium Air Purifiers with e2f technology.) since I heard air purifiers are designed to capture fine dust and maybe the solution is to just get rid of all the dust before it starts piling up .

Do you think its a good idea to replace dust filters with air purifiers ?

Just buy a handheld air compressor and you can clean with no problem (remove plug and powerdrain beforehand)

You can't stop dust, rather than using weird filters that hinders air movement, I would recommend constant cleaning.

To be honest I find it difficult to dismantle and don't know how to clean using compressed air etc . I use a hair dryer ,vacuum cleaner to blow out the dust on the outside and give it to the computer cleaning technician once a year . I read compressed air contains minute amounts of water vapor and there is probability of blowing moisture into the connectors on the mother board and damaging it. I feel I might end up doing more damage than good .

This Laptop or Desktop? And what make/model if laptop? If desktop your posting to the wrong forum-there is a Desktop forum to post your question to. This sounds like desktop from the read of it.

While this one might be a desktop question, technically, the same could be applied to a laptop, so we'll allow that one.

Air cans or this: Amazon.com: Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac 500-Watt 0.75-HP Electric Duster 120 volt: Home Improvement will do wonders for any dust buildup. Also, filters will never completely stop dust, but will mitigate the buildup over time. I'd say, clean every 6 months to a year depending on how dusty your environment is. Smoking and pets are the cause of a lot of fine dust particles.

That's a very economical and efficient way to clean out a desk or laptop.

Thanks for the suggestion .btw I forgot to mention about my pets . I have a golden retriever and 2 of her pups . She keeps shedding a lot ... I hope those room air purifiers help with that .I didn't think that pet dander also would be such a big deal. btw the metro vacuum electric duster you suggested looks very handy and easy to use . I'm thinking of giving them a try.

Air purifiers will just slow down the dust build up. If your PC sits near the floor, try raising it higher because it will suck up all the settled dust on the floor.

I use an air compressor to blow out all the machines i work on... and ive worked on some really nasty unspeakable stuff.

If you already have an air compressor, there's no need to get air cans or a duster, the datavac is great if you don't though.

Hmmm yes at the moment my PC is sitting on the floor . I'm thinking of getting a custom-made elevated stand . I'm thinking I can use the vacuum electric duster suggested by tijo is a good option for cleaning and then I'll probably run the air purifier as a preventive measure to prevent further dust from building up .

I don't have an air compressor because I wasn't sure I would figure out how to use it . Datavac sounds good to go ..

Just dropped by to say this method worked to an extent. I no longer place the PC on the floor and got few magnetic air filters for the casing. Also I noticed that placing the air purifier close to the PC helped because after a month I opened to clean the air purifier filter and I see a lot of pet dander and dust trapped in the filter fiber which otherwise I presume would have found refuge inside my computer.
