Yes it is possible. I upgraded my hp dv dv1207 (celeron 1.3G) to basically a dv1530. (Gm852 chipset to a 915 chipset then I overclocked A Pentium M 1.6G to 2.1G on the 915 chipset) I'm not sure what model dv1000 you're starting with so you will likely need more than just the motherboard. The core 2 duo's have a sata harddrive, so you will need one of those, the 945 chipset like you mentioned as well as the proper ddr2 ram. You can get the specs off of HP website as well as all the drivers you will need.

If it helps my wife has a dv1660se which has a core duo that can be upgraded to a core 2 duo. It has the 945 chipset, 533mghtz ddr2 ram, and sata hard drive. All the motherboards are physically the same size in the dv1000 series so they can be easily upgraded. Good luck.
