    Hi all. Went to go burn a cd and find that the dvd drive device has vanished from my computer. Upon inspection in device manager the dvd drive has an exclamation mark over it and under its properties the status says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)" Running XP SP3 Pro

    The drive is a Mata dvd-ram UJ-850S super multi drive. I haven't used the drive for a couple of days at least so I don't know when this occured.

    Needless to say I am baffled :confused: Any help is appreciated

    edit: just scanned for hardware changes on the device and now get this status:"Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

    How can I fix this registry problem and why would it have happened?

    I managed to fix it, after spending hours trying to figure it out a simple google search of all things gave a solution as it seems to have been a widespread problem with these drives. Either way I will post the solution here just in case others experience same problem.

    Simply access the registry editor and choose this key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    In the right panel delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters and restart the notebook - problem solved.
