Hi, I recently got a Compal Hel 80, with a Liteon SSM-8515S dvd burner. At first, everything was working fine and all, but recently, whenever I try to burn a DVD, it will burn very slowy (2x), even if the media is rated 16x. Secondly, I ran a quality test after, and got a lots of errors, which makes the DVD unreadable. I've tried many brands of DVD, always getting the same problem. The transfer setting is at DMA (Not PIO), so I'm out of ideas. Is my dvd writer going bad?

    Thanks!

Burning slowly might mean just altering a setting in the program you use. If you are getting a lot of errors (and thus making a lot of coasters) you might check to make sure that buffer under-run protection is enabled. Run a test burn after you have gotten rid of processes you don't need (cntrl+shft+esc) and make sure no other program is open.

Try updating the driver and firmware for your drive as well. This may improve compatibility with more media.

I forgot to add that I couln't get any updated firmware for the drive, even the liteon website doesn't have any.

The speed setting was at 8x, but it still burned at 2x. Buffer underun was on, and my cpu usage was very low.

Might want to uninstall the ide drivers. Windows will re-install them when re-booted.

I reinstalled windows, tried to burn some files, got the same result. I'm starting to think its the dvd writer that is starting to fail.
