right click "my computer" > properties > hardware > device manager > DVD/CDRom drives. under that is what you have for an optical drive. Either google that, or list it here so that someone can check it out for you :)

Edit: Scratch that, check my 2nd post !

If this is what you have: http://us.acer.com/acereuro/page4.d...aram=US&LanguageISOCtxParam=en&crc=1163154511

then those are the specs of your drive:
    Integrated variable-speed Super-Multi drive (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM):
    Read – 24X CD-RW, 24X CD-ROM, 24X CD-R, 8X DVD+R, 8X DVD-R, 8X DVD-ROM, 4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD-RW, 3X DVD-RAM, 2.4X DVD+R (double-layer)
    Write – 24X CD-R, 8X DVD+R, 8X DVD-R, 4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD-RW, 4X CD-RW, 2.4X DVD+R (double-layer), 3X DVD-RAM

AND YES, it does read and write DVD-RAM, how about making sure before you post DarbyJack!!!!

Yes it can write to +/-R media. DVD-RAM is very good for backups as once you format the disc, you can drag and drop within Windows Explorer. Speeds are slow though.

DVD-RAM is essentially like a harddrive, but slower. You can rewrite to it MANY times. It is probably the least supported of all DVD media.

I don't understand the difference between DVD-Rw and DVD-RAM discs. Surely, you can write on DVD-Rw's several times??

RAM allows drag and drop one file at time. and delete one at a time. Just like any other drive (HDD, floppy, flash). No need to use software like nero to write a disk at a time.

Plus RAM is rated for more rewrites than RW, so it is more reliable.

When putting in DVD RAM, would it still show up as a DVD or as a drive?

When there is no disc, it says DVD-RAM in Windows Explorer. I can't remember what it says when you put the disc in. You do have to format the disc, then you can drag and drop.

    i have some questions,
1- why it is least supported and not popular.
2- is the media costly itself( compared to DVD-R/RW)

I have toshiba satellite M 70-129. It has following drive
    HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4244N

Any idea, it can use DVD-RAM? I suspect, no as it has no DVD writter even, just read DVD, and read and write CD. I wonder why they have provided this software on my PC( not installed though).

    aigle:

DVD-RAM is not as supported nor as popular as others _because_ it is expensive. I guess the manufacturing process is more complex and more costy, so they can't mass produce DVD-RAM blanks as much as DVD-RW/+RW blanks and they can't sell them for such low prices too.

Your LG GCC drive will not be able to write DVD-RAM, but it may be able to read it.

if you have nero there is a tool called "nero info tool" that shows you your drives features. Most drives can read read RAM, but very few can write to it, especially in the notebook world (in desktops RAM is becoming a regular option)
