Okay I'm new to the laptop world. I'm most probably going for the Sager NP5793. And I heard it doesn't have HDMI but has DVI. I looked these things up on google and wikipedia, but still wanna know for sure, what they're applications are, and if I'll be missing out on anything important.
I will basically only use the laptop for gaming and internet.
    Do I need HDMI/DVI for anything ?

DVI is Digital Visual Interface, a high quality replacement for the old VGA on monitors and it also appears on some high-def tv's. HDMI is High Definition Multimedia Interface, the new generation of multimedia connection, which includes high definition video and 7.1 surround sound in the one cable. The DVI could be handy for use with an external monitor, however HDMI will only be useful if you have or plan on getting a HDTV. HDMI can also output DVI through use of an adapter if you want DVI but cant get it as a feature (HDMI seems to be prefered since it is a much smaller plug than DVI).

dvi and hdmi yield the same quality, the only benefit to hdmi is it also carries sound. if you end up with dvi only, you could always split your headphone jack to rca plugs to connect it to a home audio system...or get an x-fi card and be able to output surround sound.

I won't be using an external monitor. So I guess I won't need that stuff anyway ?

Unless you watch high-def movies through your laptop, nope. Might be handy to have in future if you get it as part of a machine you like.

you never know if maybe in the FUTURE you would wish to use HDMI. The trouble with using the XFi as a surround source is that it will not play high definition surround, DTS Tru Master/Dolby HD. This is why you would want HDMI on your laptop as with the inclusion of Bluray drives it will be beneficial to get the most from them.

Hope its ok, i continue with a couple of follow up questions.
I've also got the dvi and hdmi convert. Picture came up perfect.
I've got a sharp 42" xde1, and i got the rca cable to sound input, but do not hear any sound at all, while playing the vid.
    Any suggestions?

Further more. I could benefit of a small explanation of, why the xfi wont be able to play high definition surround?

Just a quick edit. Will this be able to play true high def surround:

Definately go with a HDMI port..

I bought a hdmi cable and plugged it in the other day, nearly wet my pants at the quality. Now i have a hdtv as an external monitor

I believe HDMI is superior to DVI. It can handle more bandwidth for hi quality visuals
