    Hi Guys,

Dunno if i am posting in the right place but here goes.

Put my existing hard-drive into a external hard drive and tried to get files from this external hard drive and transfer them into a new machine.

For some reason, the machine recognises the USB drive but when i try to open up the files i get an error message saying:
" E:/ is not accessible. Error Performing inpage operation."

Does anyone have any idea on how/if this can fixed so i can view my files ??

    Cheers

DO you have the jumper set correctly? If I remeber correctly ata-6 has jumpers, but I may be wrong.

Well harddrives have jumpers which label the drive as either master, slave or cable select. and with a usb interface I think it needs to be either slave or cable select. I cant remeber to clearly as it has been a long time since I used a ata-6 lappy drive on a external usb converter interface.

When you take the harddrive out, look at the back of it. Next to where the cables are attached, there shoudl be a few pins (something like 2x4 of them), and a little plastic thingy connecting two pins. That's a jumper. Depending on which pins you connect with it, you can change the harddrive settings.

Hopefully, there are labels or something showing which position means what. (usually, they show which pins should be connected for each of MA, SL and CS - Master, Slave, Cable Select.)

However, that's as far as I can help. I don't have much experience with the external usb converter stuff, so don't know which position it should be set to.

If you set the jumper to cable select, that should work fine with most USB enclosures.

Go to your hard drive manufacturer's Web site and search for your specific model. Usually there will be a section for downloads, and there should be a quick-start guide or instruction manual to download. One of those documents should have a list detailing where the jumpers are located and in what position they need to be in order to be set for cable select.

    Thanks for the reply.
    My hard-drive is a Fujitsu MHV2040AH.

I can't find anything on this website that will help.

Note that the jumper may not have been installed when the drive shipped. It may be somewhere in the original packaging. If not, you may have to run to an electronic supply store and purchase a jumper. Look at the diagrams and follow them - to get cable select, you have to position the jumper horizontally along the last two pins of the bottom row.

    Thanks for all the help.

Went into a electronic store and they looked at me blank. Is there any example of a jumper online that i can compare or possibly buy online?

Do a Google image search for "hard drive jumper" and it's the little plastic thing that goes around the pins. Try a local computer shop then, they may have extras that they'd be willing to sell or give to you.

I'd hook up the external drive to another computer and see if it recognizes it. I don't think you need a jumper - my external 2.5" has none, and there are no problems.

I also think the jumper story might be unlikely. If that was the problem, the HD wouldn't be recognized at all. But it is recognized, it's just the partition that's not accessible.

Which system did you take the HD from, and which system are you trying to connect it to? And what exactly happens when you connect it?

Was the hard drive "primary" in your Compaq...meaning that it was the C: drive with the operating system on it?

The hard drive is not getting enough power. Do you have a Y split to your External hard drive. For mine I have a Data +power side and a Power only side. It wasn't working that well on just the Data and power, so I add the other one in and Viola it worked.

I bought jumpers for the hard drive but they dont seem to have an effect after i attached them to the hard drive, i still get the same error message. Is there something that im supposed to be doing with the jumpers??
