i'm considering getting a 9cell battery for my xps m1530 but i'm not sure if it will perform like an oem battery. Does anyone have any recent experiences with batteries from ebay?

I would stick with OEM batteries. Non-OEM batteries can come from a variety of sources including recalls, and you certainly wouldn't want to take that chance.

There is computerized circuitry in the battery that comunicates with your notebook that allows for accurate charging
I would not trust a generic battery to work as well as the stock battery
Ask me how I know this

I was going to suggest going through freshbattery.com, but they don't make one yet for your laptop. They list the 140 and the 170. But they're a really good company to work with and order from. I guess in your case, I would go straight through Dell.

Yes...
I gave up on them after trying 2 new genaric batterys in 2 separate older laptops
Problem was flashing red light displaying a problem sometimes, all related as I said to the comunications between the battery and what the laptop expects to see
The cells might have been good but as I said , Problems
The savings on them in compairing a new battery not worth it
